While I agree, the people are so bad, it sucks the fun right out of it.
I stopped playing on the weekends. Wasn't worth taking up my entire day for it most times. Early mornings during the week is the only time I'll go since I have the schedule to do it and my golf buddies don't mind using their PTO to do the same.

There are rules in golf for good reasons. When you are playing slow, and not letting other groups through, you are being discourteous. Other things happen when newbies play, too, like scuff marks on greens from players who don't know how to pick their feet up, uncorrected ball marks on greens, divots not replaced, etc.

Of course munis are the worst for this - last week we saw a foursome of kids (couldn't have been any older than 20) who were riding on the back of the cart, no shirt on, boom box blaring, beer cans flying out into the rough. Kind of takes all the fun out of it.

EDIT: And yeah, there are times when golf DOES suck. Like when you go out and shoot 94.

Im in my 40s and music and beer is pretty standard in my cart. Nothing better then Busch Light and country rap while golfing.

People that take forever to look for their ball is probably the most annoying part of golf to me. The buddy that I have golfed with the most will take 5-10 minutes looking for his ball cause “I swear it didn’t go OB” while we have a group behind us waiting. Meanwhile if we’re on a cart, I’ll take one pass down and back and if I don’t see my ball I’ll just grab a new one. Then again, I use whatever crappy golf ball I have in my bag. I’m just out there to have fun not trying to get good enough to win a major

IMO... 3.5 - 4 hours is ideal for 18 holes. 5 hours or longer is too long, but 3 hours or less is also too fast IMO.

My life is hectic enough, so I go golfing to unwind and relax, but some of you that are playing 18 holes in under 3 hours..... that isn't relaxing at all. That's just "hurry, hurry, hurry... we have to go as fast as we can!".

When I was teaching my son the game, of course we were slow, but we always let people through. But there were people, even when we let them through, that would yell at us saying things like.. "the driving range is for learning the game!". It was a terrible experience, and therefore, my son never grew fond of the game, and to this day doesn't play, which is sad, because I'm obsessed with it and think it's the greatest game ever and always dreamed of playing golf until I got old with my son like I've done with my Dad. But that will likely not happen now.

So even though I'm passionate about the game and believe it's by far the best sport in the world, there are things I don't like about it, and the #1 is that a majority of golfers seem to be arrogant a-holes. They all walk and act like they are on the PGA Tour, and most of them suck.

Here's my gripe with carts.

If a single player goes to play he pays $15 or whatever for the cart. The cart is no longer available for other groups.

If a two-some plays they EACH pay $15 for the same single cart. Why is this a thing? The cart would already be out of service so the course is charging you for nothing.

If you rent a car they charge by the car, not the number of people who will be sitting in it. It pisses me off every single time.
Be careful what you wish for. I'm guessing the carts are used by 2 people the vast majority of the time, so the pricing is based on that assumption. If they just charged for the cart, it would be closer to the $30 (that they currently get from two riders) than $15.

If you really enjoy playing golf, Top Golf doesn't quite hit the spot. It's fun, but I'll take playing 18 on a good course any day.

Generally speaking, I think issues at golf courses come from a lack of experience. I was lucky enough to learn at a young age, and etiquette was always just as important as learning to hit the ball.

If you're just learning, don't get a tee time at 1:00 on a Saturday. Hit the twilight prices on weekdays. If you're spraying the ball all over the course, it's OK to take a mulligan here and there, but not on every tee. Know when to stop looking for a lost ball. Know when to pick up your ball and head to the next hole. Drive to your cart mate's ball and drop them off. Then go find your ball, and they can catch up after they hit. You don't have to drive the cart everywhere. You don't need to walk around the green like you're playing at Augusta on Sunday. Take a look at your line, take a practice stroke, step up to the ball and hit it.

Some of it is the courses not knowing what they're doing, but there's some simple etiquette you can pick up from people who have played that makes it more enjoyable for everyone. Golf is a great sport. I'm guessing most who are complaining in this thread have a little trouble keeping the ball between the trees. Hit the range.

The bigger problem with slow play is the lack of etiquette and awareness, not lack of skill.

It's the wandering around forever looking for your ball, taking 5 practice swings, looking over your putt for 5 minutes type stuff that slows it up.

Also, make sure gimmes are allowed. Making everyone putt everything out slows it down too.

Yesterday I played with a buddy at a course with very few people on it. There was a 5-some in front of us (4 carts, btw - which seems odd) but on the greens they would all gather in a group, one guy would go putt, and then regather and the next guy would putt.

The way my buddy and I play is he'll drop me off at the ball, I'll hit while he goes to look for his ball, etc. We don't each go to everyone's ball. Then when we putt whoever is to the green first will just putt. No sense to wait if you're on the green 10 feet from the cup while the other guy is looking for a ball in the rough.

Agree. One of my biggest pet peeves is when you have a foursome on the green ahead of you and while the first person is putting, the other 3 are just standing there talking instead of lining up their putts. So then when it's the next person's turn to putt, they aren't ready and haven't even looked at their putt yet, so they have to go through their whole analysis and routine from the start.

When it's your turn to putt, you should have already lined it up and be ready to go.

Any of them wearing cutoff jean shorts? That’s usually a bad sign in my experience. Also, the ones that throw an extra ball down in the fairway so their 4 year old can take a few swings on a crowded course.

Never judge a book by it's cover. I golfed with a dude at Waveland a few years back who was wearing jean shorts and a neck blanket. On the third hole he pulls a bowl out of his bag, loads it up, and takes a few rips and proceeds to birdie the next 3 holes. Dude ended up shooting like a 73.

What kills me though is even if you want to take your time as you play, hurry your ass back to the cart once you've putted. It's taking 30 minutes to act like the putt didn't break the way you thought it would when you really have no damn clue, put the flag back in, have a good chuckle, clean your clubs, grab a new beer, stop and hit on the beer cart girl, then drive to the next hole types that drive me crazy. If you want to play a little slower, whatever, it still drives me nuts but I get it. But at least give the appearance of trying to get out of the way once you're done.

Watched a guy the other day miss a 5 footer, drop his club, squat down and put his hands in his face for a good 30 seconds like he had just missed a putt to win the god damn US Open, all while we are waiting on the tee box.

Within reason, people just need to ready golf. Obviously if you're 100 yards in front of the person you're playing with don't but when you're both 150 yards out on opposite sides of the fairway/rough there isn't a reason to not hit at the same time.

Similarly on greens, when the foursome has the hole surrounded 35 feet away in each direction, everyone can putt instead of 3 people watching. Chances you play croquet aren't great.

You don't all have to hit at the same time to keep pace of play up. Just be ready when it's your turn.

All of the nicer public courses in the DSM area are all big on pace of play. The guys down at Legacy are complete a-holes about it even though 95% of the time there really isn't anything a specific group can usually do. These courses also do it to themselves because they stack the tee times. Putting a group on the box every 6-8 minutes isn't going to work because eventually there will be a bottleneck and then you are screwed.

This is false. A person can be bad at golf and still keep pace.
I tried to play as fast as I could but still had the course speed patrol after me. It just takes more time to find your ball 6-12 times per hole and hit it that many more times than someone who it getting to their ball and hitting it half as many times.
