Jokes about Old Maine Brew and parking at Kmart could be a bit out of place on a thread started by an out-of-towner who would have zero clue that the locals are joking. Don't get me wrong, I chuckled at both, but again...probably not overly helpful.

Think of the potential message board content, though.

If you do stay in Ames, Wallabe's north of campus is a great upscale place. ISU coaches occasionally hang out there. Great patio on the roof, great burgers and decent beer choices. But it is north of campus, so if you stay in DM, traffic around gameday can be challenging. Just follow Stange road til you see CY on the left LOL (past Veeneker golf course)

I concur about Wallaby's. It has become our "go to" place when entertaining someone who is interested at all in sports.

Whatever you do, go somewhere for a pork tenderloin sandwich. I haven't lived in Iowa for many years so others can probably point you in the right direction, but they are delicious. I would probably stab somebody in the eye for one right now.

I used to follow this blog on Tenderloins... it hasn't been updated in a while but I still use the older reviews as a guide to look up tenderloin places.

I mentioned Fat Tuesday before. For tenderloins, try Smitty's just 5 blocks west of Fat Tuesday. Per a story in the DM Register:
On May 15, People magazine published an article titled "The Best Sandwich in Every State and Washington, D.C." Food writer, Madison Roberts listed Smitty's Tenderloin Shop at 1401 Army Post Road in Des Moines as having the best sandwich in Iowa.

"Crowds flock to this old-school diner for fried-food favorites, including the King Loin: a massively wide, breaded-and-fried pork tenderloin placed inside a pillowy bun," Roberts wrote.

And to compare, then try Nick's just a couple blocks east of Smitty's. Per their website: If you’re looking for a fresh, never frozen product, look no further than Nick’s Restaurant on Army Post Road in Des Moines, IA. All of our meat and produce are born and raised right here in Central Iowa and only raised by vendors who don’t believe in a freezer! We’re known for our tenderloin, which won the 2016 Iowa Pork Producers Tenderloin of the year, but we’re proud to have a menu that delivers whatever your taste buds desire.

You can order them pre breaded and shipped from Amana, then just pan fry them up.

Some have mentioned visiting campus but haven't elaborated. Iowa State is a regular on most of the "most beautiful campuses" lists. It is nothing like a urban campus. We don't have a river or bayou like ULM, but it is still pretty striking. Keep in mind that the heart of the campus is just under a mile walking distance and about half of that as the crow flies from the stadium. If you are looking to get there with a map app, get directions to the Memorial Union - the heart of the campus is just north of it.
