I thought he had the potential to really do some good things here. Honestly I think this one is a shock. I wonder what happened. I loved how he was coming along defensively at the end of the season. Wichita State maybe?

Kind of surprised but lets be honest we had a roster of people that were not B12 caliber players and it showed in the product that was put on the court. If one more clears out as well that means we start with a clean deck which is a good thing as we need B12 caliber players and athletes.

He didn't but I think the potential was there.

Did Naz or Matt T look like one as a freshman.. i'd argue probably not.

They were both far better than Grill. Grill struggled with a lot of basic skills that someone playing the big 12 should not struggle with. I don’t want to pile on too much but he could barely even dribble. I’m more worried about the fact that Prohm saw him as one of our best 8 players

It could be even worse that Grill was probably one of the best 8 players.

Towards the end there we had no one left.

I think there was a reason he was committed to SDSU, too. Outside of KSU, we were his only other P5 offer.

If Grill ends up going to Wichita State or even UNLV, this will make more sense to me. Wichita State due to the school being 20 minutes from where he grew up. UNLV due to him still having a connection to TJ. Caleb and his mom were still liking and retweeting anything that had to do with UNLV throughout the year.

Prohm was given the keys to a vintage Corvette... and drove it straight into a tree.

I would have penciled him in as 1st guard off the bench next year. Lowered expectations on all fronts I suppose

Not his whole life, I think. He became a fan of the style recently rather than love for the school.

This one sucks. Thought he was going to be a solid rotation guy eventually.

I saw pictures of him as a young boy wearing Iowa State clothing. He's been a fan for quite a while.

Haven’t read the thread yet but here’s my opinion on this news. Iowa State Basketball may or not be okay moving forward but the departure of Caleb Grill will have zero impact on that. In fact, I think we have a better chance to turn this around without him than we do with him.

Firstly, I want to say I appreciate Caleb Grill choosing to be a Cyclone. I always loved how hard he played. I wish him nothing but the best at his next school. Him growing up as a Cyclone fan probably made everyone want him to succeed more than the average ISU player.

Secondly, here’s why I think this decision doesn’t negatively impact ISU basketball. In my honest opinion, he just wasn’t a Big 12 level player. Could he be a decent role guy off the bench? Perhaps. Overall, just like Zion, he lacked some essential skills to make him an impact player at this level. That would be his ball handling ability. If you watched him and Zion closely, you could tell both of them really struggled putting the ball on the floor. As a result, they could only spot up and shoot 3’s in which they didn’t even do it at a high percentage. I didn’t really see those ball skills turning around to the point where he could be a good player on a good team.

With Zion and Caleb transferring, I think Prohm and Iowa State needs to get back to having guards that are playmakers. Zion and Caleb couldn’t do that so these moves allow ISU to go out and find two players that will be able to help turn this thing around quicker than Grill or Zion would have been able to. Now the hard part will be Prohm actually finding those guys and successfully landing them. We know that hasn’t been easy for him lately.

Good luck running a program recruiting one or two and dones and losing your 4 year development guys. It doesn't work, clearly. Losing Griffin is fine since he wasn't really bought in. Losing someone like Grill, who has a fairly large ceiling once he's a single sport athlete who competes hard, is in no way, shape or form good. He wasn't ever going to be a star but he could be a role guy for a couple more years and potentially a starter down the line. The expectation that ISU is going to win recruiting one and dones and high level transfers is extremely misguided. It's basically the same recruiting world with those guys and it'd be best if everyone let go of the days when we could get top level transfers all the time because now everyone is going to fill holes with them. The way to compete is a majority of 3-4 year guys with solid roster stability and a high level talent thrown in here and there. Even at our best transfer days, our core was the 4 year guys. Not being able to retain guys like Grill, Griffin and whoever else is not the answer.

This is where I abandon hope. I don't think Prohm manages personalities well and I don't think he has any clue how to get through on the defensive end. I'll defend his offensive coaching until I'm blue in the face but the rest is lacking in a large way. I thought that if he retains a lot of the roster, gets some development from some guys, hits on this next class, and maybe grabs a guard on the transfer market, there's a solid foundation for the future. I just don't see that happening.

Have we considered that after his performance in the Big 12 tournament he said "screw it, I'm too good for this place" and is looking for a higher-level program?

What's that now?

Don't get me wrong. The tone isn't bad for either. People are generally very supportive of guys who either decide to leave, or are told to leave. But, the level of disappointment/anger in this thread compared to the Griffin thread is pretty obviously different.
