June 25, 2020
Dear Cyclone fans,
As we head toward the Fourth of July, we thought it was time to share an update on our athletics department’s re-engagement efforts.
In May, we shared with you that to play football this fall we needed to successfully bring our players back to campus safely, officially start team activities and eventually return to pre-season practice.
In the last couple of weeks, we have welcomed back nearly 100 football players to train with our strength and conditioning staff. As part of that process, we have tested nearly 160 football players and staff since June 1 with only four positive COVID-19 tests. The diligent commitment to safety by our medical and football coaching staffs has been instrumental to our low numbers. The next hurdle will be when the football team begins team activities on July 13.
The on-boarding process for other Cyclone sports to return to campus – volleyball, soccer, women’s and men’s cross country (July 6) and women’s and men’s basketball (July 15) – begins in earnest next month. All remaining sports will return to Ames in August. We are bringing teams back in a staggered fashion to avoid a large influx of student-athletes, which could put a significant strain on our department, university and community.
Given that Story County has experienced a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases (471 total cases since June 1), we are very pleased by the commitment that our student-athletes, coaches and medical staff have made to mitigating COVID-19 infections. We recognize the sacrifices being made by our student-athletes to adhere to mitigation guidelines is probably greater than many other residents in Story County.
We continue to stress to our student-athletes and staff the need to wear face coverings when appropriate, commit to washing their hands frequently and adhering to proper social distancing protocol.
We are also pleased to share that we have sold out all available tickets for the 2020 football season. As previously shared, we are limiting fan capacity to 50% in Jack Trice Stadium to provide an opportunity for fans to attend games while also adhering to the State’s protocol for large public gatherings.
Our department continues to work with NCAA, Big 12 and university officials to finalize a comprehensive list of mitigation measures for our athletics venues. In addition to limiting seating capacity, we will reduce the time parking lots are open for tailgating, require face coverings to enter the stadium, move to digital ticketing, install additional hand sanitization stations, change entrance procedures, modify concession operations, as well as many other initiatives. A complete list of mitigation strategies for each athletics venue will be distributed prior to opening any facilities this season.
The department also plans to make available an overview seating chart of Jack Trice Stadium, so you can know in advance how many other fans renewed season tickets in your section. We will also provide our season ticket holders the opportunity to temporarily relocate to a less-populated section for 2020 or request a refund if they are not comfortable attending games.
The safety of all participants and fans remains the top priority and that is why such thorough and comprehensive mitigation plans are being vetted for all of our venues. As we previously shared, attempts to implement mitigation strategies to a standard of absolute protection is simply not reasonable. It will ultimately be up to each attendee to decide if they are comfortable attending games given the mitigation strategies we implement.
Although athletics events will have significantly reduced capacities this year, we hope to continue to be a significant economic engine for our community and state. We recognize that our athletics events play a significant role in the economic well-being of many businesses and residents. That is a responsibility we do not take lightly.
In closing, we hope you enjoy your summer and we look forward to re-uniting as a family to cheer for our Cyclone this fall.
Go Cyclones!
Sincerely,
Jamie Pollard
Director of Athletics
