My wife drives a Traverse because I couldn’t talk her into a minivan. While the seating may be comparable, I’m not aware of a minivan with cargo capacity that is anywhere close to that, much less a Suburban.
I don't know. I'm sure the Suburban's payload is higher, but last time our family (2 adults, a 13 year old, a 12 year old, a 10 year old and a 3 years old in a car seat) drove from WA to IA we packed 2 full size suitcases, 3 carry-on size suitcases, a cooler and my old football dufflebag just behind the 3rd row. Then we also had a pack-n-play, umbrella stroller, box of snacks, a pillow and book bag of entertainment stuff for each kid, box of diapers and diaper bag in the aisle between the bucket seats all the way back to the 3rd row. Then we had even more stuff to bring home once all the grandparents had bought the kids stuff. None of the kids was squished, or were touching each other.

And you can haul lumber too...

My odyssey minivan has over 30 cubic feet more cargo room than a suburban. Almost 60 more than a Traverse. Thanks to the low floors where the AWD transfer case sits on SUV's

A friend of mine was having their first kid...and it ended up being triplets. He said he almost passed out at the appointment when he found out.

He said he was going to buy a big Suburban to haul them around in. Even though I have no children, I told him he really needed to reconsider and instead get a mini-van. He was staunchly in the "I'll never drive a mini-van" camp. So he bought the giant Suburban.

The kids are two now. Oh man does he regret not listening to me. He considered swapping out for a minivan but he would take a bloodbath on the trade.

The cubic feet is great but the dogs start to get antsy when you try to stack them on top of each other.

even my Truck prior to the Palisade I put 17k on it the first year and that was living 4 mi from DMACC and work.

put to answer your other question the Dodge Grand Caravan has 143 cubic feet behind the first row while the Suburban only has 121 cubic feet.
the only reason to get a Suburban/Tahoe or a mid size CUV over a van is if you need to still be able to tow a bit. it's the only reason I didn't say no your getting a damn van to the fiancee. they really are the best people/things movers possible.. and anyone who says other wise is just lying to themselves and costing themselves.

I have two co-workers who bought a 4 Runner and Traverse at their second kids birth. One took a bath and traded for a sienna. The other wishes he could

I told her we will be ok with a 2nd kid, but if we go for a third, I don't give a damn we are getting a van at that point, probably will do a used conversion van then.:D:p:D

Man, I'm telling you, its probability and randomness and the Law of Large Numbers. If GM built 100k trucks exactly like yours - and they probably did - then with a 0.1% failure rate there would be 100 unlucky people who had AC issues. You just ended up on the wrong side this time. Compare that to your 97 Ford which was part of the 1% that had no problems for over 200k miles.

On new or refreshed models, reliability will always be a little lower. That's a risk you take regardless of the sticker price. During that first year they learn what's wrong and fix it for the 2nd and 3rd year. That's the auto industry.

A target loss rate is going to be 99.5% during production so that means that we know that we are going to have issues requiring repairs before it leaves the factory.

FYI - We rarely hit that goal, daily or monthly.

Lol. We just found out a couple days ago were having our third. I was just talking with my wife tonight about trading in her traverse on a minivan. I just can’t stomach eating what we paid for that thing though. A 2015 at 60k, I think we’ll hang onto it. Since she quit her job to stay home with our now middle child, she’s put maybe 4K a year on it but god damn it’d be nice to have a van.

We will routinely have a couple feet of snow on our streets where we live. I've buried pickups in four wheel drive low out by us. My wife would get stuck with our minivan. The Suburban gave us additional clearance and full time four wheel drive to get through it.

Eh, I got a 4Runner for kid 2 and have been pretty happy with it. Got the fold flat third row, and kid 1 loves to sit "in the way back" when my parents come.

For visits back to Iowa, we've got a roof top cargo carrier. Mainly because my wife doesn't know how to pack.

More on topic, my Dad has been driving Suburbans since 1995 and I can't recall him ever having too many issues with them. On their last trip down, however, they had an issue on the return trip. Needed a new throttle body, I think. But his is a 2011.

No doubt they are nice. But a roof carrier isn't necessary with all the van space. Depends on priorities I guess

The real gas mileage difference between the 4Runner and the minivan is usually pretty significant.

Why wouldn't a Traverse work for 3 kids? It has a 3rd row. I guess it may depend on how old your oldest 2 are if 1 still requires some kind of car seat. We have a 2015 Traverse and yeah we fold down the 3rd row when we travel but it we had a 3rd kid (not going to happen for us without an act of God if you catch my drift) I think we could still make it work with more efficient packing. I'm not eager to buy a van as much as you are either.

The funny thing about cars is as much as we like to complain about repairs, if you have them paid off the repairs are still cheaper than buying a new car and having a car payment again. We have a 2015 Traverse with 78k miles that so far have not have any repairs outside of the warranty period yet and a 2007 Impala with 117k that we had to put in just under $2000 in repairs last year when we had a catastrophic failure in the rear suspension. Everything we have put into that car post warranty has been mostly wear and tear repairs at this point but especially now with the wife working from home because of Covid I have to make a point to drive it to work once in awhile to make sure it doesn't sit too long. It sucked to put some money into it the past few years on some things but it still beats a car payment and with the current situation had we replaced it a year or 2 ago with a new vehicle it would just be sitting the the garage while we were making payments on it. Our goal is once we get our youngest out of daycare in 2 years we may finally replace it.
