We will routinely have a couple feet of snow on our streets where we live. I've buried pickups in four wheel drive low out by us. My wife would get stuck with our minivan. The Suburban gave us additional clearance and full time four wheel drive to get through it.
if you have buried 4wd trucks, you would just as easily bury the Suburban then.... also I have driven FWD sedans past trucks and SUVs stuck the the snow multiple times before..
The only thing i have learned from this thread is no kids=no van
parents, both of us kids had moved out, dad went and bought another new Grand Caravan because of how damn useful they are. can fit the tandom inside no problem, and carry all the gear they need.

My experience is that GM makes crappy cars, and they load them up with lots of flashy electronic stuff so they look like a spaceship, but their electronics match the cars. Drivetrain wise they are okay, but fit, finish, electronics are way behind Toyota, Honda and probably even Ford.

Ok, so basically the only components that GM actually makes are the frame, body panels, transmission and engine. An assembly plant will always be supplied by another GM transmission and engine plant and some assembly pants have stamping shops that make their own panels, while some don't.

Every other part is a supplier part and there are only so many suppliers. So a supplier that sends GM radios, seats, air conditioners, carpet, instrument panels, spoilers, mirrors, etc. also sends parts to other automobile manufacturers. That being said, there are different levels of these products and a radio in a Cadillac is going to be more expensive than a radio in a Chevy and that is what accounts for the difference in price.

I have been in more OEM plants than I can count and I can tell you that General Motors makes really nice vehicles. I am basing that on the manufacturing processes and quality of components that they use. Surprisingly, I would say that Tesla makes the worst vehicles in terms of these things. They are built with really shoddy parts and their quality numbers reflect this as they are really rated poorly.

I do not have any experience with KIa, but based on the information that I have being in the industry, I would never buy one.

So your point about Honda and Toyota being ahead of GM with electronics is just untrue because the manufacturers of the electronics in all of these vehicles are pretty much the same.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions.

I wish the heavy duty truck market was big enough to influence some of these suppliers. We buy a lot of the same engine and exhaust system sensors and they just don't hold up to the semi usage. For example, NOx sensors always die between 100k and 200k miles. Thats fine for your 1 ton pickup, but thats only 18 months of operation in a Class 8 over-the-road truck. We can complain all we want but when the market is only 500k semis per year compared to 100s of millions of light duty diesel cars and truck globally, the suppliers just don't care that bad.

There is just so much less money in commercial. I have supplied PACCAR, CAT, and Navistar and there is also so much less stress.

I always say I will never go back to automotive until they start waving cash under my nose and I go.

I'm with PACCAR. None of the divisions that actually sell trucks, but i work at the vehicle proving grounds about 60mi north of Seattle.
