I think the culture of our fanbase really meshes well with his personality. Nothing is given, everything has been and will always be earned. A build it and they will come mentality. I think MC understands and appreciates that.

I love that through Thanksgiving- Iowa State will have more wins than Iowa, Nebraska, & Minnesota combined. If we can grab a toe-hold on upper midwest talent and grab market share (talent and fans) within Iowa upon the inevitable Ferentz transition of power, the long-term outlook is very bright for Campbell and Iowa State.

That being said, Michigan scares the hell out of me. Mich St is down, Penn St. is trending down. The once high barriers appear to be much lower, but the leash is short and expectations are ridiculously high. The challenge to take down Ohio State might be very compelling....

Let's soak it in and enjoy our run to a Big 12 Championship in the meantime. Incredible time to be a Cyclone.

Guys, I already wrote that I loved the article and I did. But.... I could see Michigan being a legit concern for us this winter. It is what it is, but I could see it. Pulling a Hoiberg move and leaving a fully stocked team for the next head coach is also something I could see Campbell thinking would help the transition.

I think more than anything part of him kind of just wants to be understood and respected.

Wait, what? Why didn't he want to talk? Wasn't the line when he got hired that he liked our tailgating so much ...

If anyone believes that line, I have a ocean side condo to sell you in Marshalltown ;)

But Campbell didn't want to interview with anyone until their season was over. They were a game and had they won, they have played in the championship game and he said he wouldn't interview. Pollard was in Toledo in case Toledo lost and was able to get to Campbell first.

I love Matt Campbell as much as anyone and hope he is in Ames for the next 25 years! But those who think he can't get a statue at a different school...he could! Any school! Sure things would have to go right but what coach doesn't envision his program going "right"? He is young enough that he could be at his next job (hope there is no "next job") for 20+ years if things go as he would hope! So he easily could make a monumental mark on some of the legendary programs in college football. Does he want that? No idea...but he is the right age to leave a legacy at any position he may take (or at the position he currently holds)!

So basically all we need to do is set up a barricade around his house after our last game and start slashing tires of anyone who is not authorized trying to get to his house.

I like it! Way to think outside the box.

I agree with the general sentiment, but didn't he kind of do the bolded when he came here?
I think there's a big difference in the bad culture he inherited here, which was used to failure and hungry for anything resembling success, and the bad culture he'd inherit at a place like Michigan, which included a fanbase that is starving for national relevance and has no patience for a guy who is currently 48-21 in his tenure with three 10-win seasons. Michigan is obviously a better job from a historical significance and perks standpoint, but as has been pointed out in this thread and in the article, is that what CMC is after?

IIRC, a couple of hours before the Toledo/I State game in September, 2015, CMC took a walk up to the upper deck of the Jack, overlooked the pre-game atmosphere and contacted his wife, gushing about the "feel" of game time at I State.

I see you're from Carroll, do you still ride around with cytwins in his minivan?

Good read.

Cyclone tight end Chase Allen jokes about Campbell’s penchant for all-black outfits – “He’s Johnny Cash.” Campbell wears the same black hoodie so often that senior defensive back Greg Eisworth will ask: “Do you wash your clothes?”

:D

I particularly like the Kolar quote: “The good thing about Campbell,” jokes redshirt junior tight end Charlie Kolar, “if you miss his message once, you’ll get it the next 10 weeks.”

To a certain extent, yes. I would argue that when he came here, the only thing lacking from our football program was the coach. A lot of the pieces were already here or in progress (facilities, fans / support, "culture"), we just needed someone to pull it all together (and he has and then some). Not really a mess per ce. Now 20-25 years ago, no question we were a mess and it took 4 coaches, 3 athletic directors, 4 presidents, and a load of $$, to get us to today. It hasn't always been easy, it never was a straight line, but here we are.

Love this article and will read anything I can on MC. Tons of parallels to working in the private sector. Developing relationships, being able to respect each other and have difficult conversations, but when it's time to go to work and get something done, you get it done. Money isn't everything, and in terms of motivating factors usually comes in low on a 1-10 scale (think 7-8 range). Not all that is measured, matters. Hope like hell he stays here and accomplishes what he wants. I mean where we are right now, why can't we do everything here that he could accomplish at a blue blood? Sure he could double his salary, but the freedom here, vs. at say Michigan, has to be night and day. Funny thing seems to be that the more money you have the higher expectations and more "influence" others may have on you. I think the key is finding the "sweet spot" where you can maximize the income while having carte blanche to do what you want (which you would be hard pressed to beat ISU on this).

I have seen some folks mention MC's contract. IIRC, there is a clause in there that says something about having an out if Pollard is no longer the AD (or words to that effect). The guy is about people and relationships. That's it.

I think more or less, the problem here was a lack of a winning culture.

As opposed to the dumpster fires elsewhere. Just for one example, from what I’ve heard about Michigan, ISU’s AD actually helps Matt Campbell, rather than putting up roadblocks.

BTW, the only way this article could be better is if it had been written by Rob Gray.
