It’s because the font for our numbers has the 9 almost completely connecting back on the tail like an 8.

And the stupid styling of the 8 makes it look like a 9 at first glance.

Not exactly sure.
I can't understand the like/love for our yellow helmet of the mid '80s and early '90s. It is one of the reasons Campbell has not opted for a gold set of either yellow helmet or pant. We still have that shade of gold/yellow. There might be an association of past failure also.

What would work well and did was the gold we had from '68-82, before Criner switched us to the brighter colors. Criner's Unis would have been better with the old gold. Waldon's unis (which were good) would have been great with our '70's gold! No brainer really IMO.
No, Campbell doesn’t use gold/yellow because he routinely uses black. Add yellow to that and who do we look like?

It was a terrible idea. Every opponent knew who to focus on by the helmet color. I was a student in that era. Never want to see that again.
If a team had to rely on the color of the helmet to figure out who the stars were..............well there's no hope for that team.

All I'm saying is that if some day we were to do a Yellow/Gold set, I would much prefer the 1968-82 version of gold, maybe a little lighter. Keep the present yellow/gold but use it mostly for trim (or numbers if want a gold number).

At the rate Campbell is using black, I don't think it's really feasible to have a gold set, maybe later. There would be too many combo options with a gold set and there are only 6 Home games! It wouldn't be cost effective.

I mean I would like a gold set personally, but if Campbell wants his black as much as he does, I'll get used to it.

They were our version of the helmet sticker. Clones were trying to do something different. Ohio State had the stickers and we decided to award helmets of different color to those who made plays or worked the butts off in practice. It was a pretty funny concept looking back. When I was little it helped me know who the best guys were

I still think that's what caused a couple of the illegal formation/ineligible man downfield penalties early in the year. With 88/89 lined up next to each other, one on the line and one off, the refs need to be really sharp to keep them straight throughout the play.

That particular tornado look was so 1980s. The ISU losing tradition matched it. Criner and Walden. Those helmets and logo should be put into a time capsule, buried and hoping to never be found centuries later.

I respect the opinions of others on this as I know there are several that like it. It's just my 2 cents, nothing more.

I was going to suggest it get launched into the sun, but your idea works too. With the exception of one win over Nebraska, and Oklahoma, plus the arrival of Troy Davis, most of the rest was a mess. We had a couple good players, but the wins were few, and losses weren't very competitive.
Just looking at our scores against Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa from that era, we were 2-34 with an average score being 37-13. Throw Colorado in and we can add 1 win and averaged 11 points a game. So out of 48 games against 4 opponents, we won 3 and couldn't average 2 TD's a game against any of the 4 opponents.

I'd throw up a bit if Campbell and team were to come out onto the field wearing those era unis.

It would work with Kolar and seohner. I struggle with them and their numbers.
So do the officials. They called a penalty on Kolar against TT (I think) maybe OU that negated a TD saying he was ineligible because he was covered up on the line when it was Soehner who was covered up.
