Please give us a good reason why Steve Prohm should still be the coach at Iowa State. I’ve never placed a bet on the Hawks and I feel sick to my stomach that the biggest bet I’ve ever placed was for the Hawks against my Cyclones.

Lighten up, Francis. We've got a ton of new players who because of COVID have been unable to build any chemistry. Veteran teams have a huge advantage this year.

Yes, it's really as simple as that.

It's best to accept that we're going to have losing records for the rest of Prohm's stay in Ames. He would have changed his staff up awhile ago if he was at all capable of being aware of his short comings. He's not, so he didn't. Enjoy the tire fire folks.

I was hoping that after last year JP would have least 'suggested' assistant changes were needed. Biggest fail IMHO.

I will say I was honestly pretty happy with how we played last night. That said we still lost by almost 30. Iowa is really good but that is still not an acceptable point to be in.

The key though why Prohm is going to leave it worse is because his down years are going to be worse. It also leaves the impression that only Fred can make us successful.

Not revisionist History... His last 3 years he finished 11th, 12th, and 11th in B12, averaging only 4 conference wins a season. We were terrible when he left.

I don’t know if I would agree. ISU is obviously more athletic and has more potential if you take Garza out of the equation, but Iowa’s guys are far more skilled. Wieskamp and Frederick are incredibly skilled.

Thats true. But Fran put them in a system that has made them better.

But none of them are heads and shoulders more talented than our core group. I know Iowa has played together a lot more but that’s been Prohm’s biggest issue IMO, he’s always shifting pieces in and out of the program whereas Fran recruited people that fit his system. Hell, Prohm doesn’t even HAVE a system to recruit to.

Prohm can recruit. This year is a bust due to covid. Garza is NPOY candidate. Does it suck? Yes. But these players believe in him.
Do they though? It took Foster one game to get pissed about his playing time and we've had a crap ton of guys either not buy into him or bail early because they didn't want to play here anymore. It's a trend at this point and only a matter of time before he starts losing the players again.

You act like that is worse than what we are seeing. At least McDermott didn’t come into a top 10 team and then destroy it they had issues before hand too. Prohm destroying the Hoiberg style program makes it worse.

Prohm is on track to finish 9 or 10 which is the same thing in 4 of his last 5 and all of his last three. The good year was a dysfunctional 5th place finish.

Can we get GMac back? He at least went .500 or close to it most years.

Fire Prohm.

Yes, NBA first round bigs just grow on trees.

Sure players like Loren Meyer don't happen every year, but looking back over the last 20 years the Cyclones have put some solid 4/5 players on the court to compliment really strong guards.

But we aren't seeing that kind of recruiting by Prohm. The post players Prohm has recruited that earned consistent playing time are: Young, Lard, Jacobson (tfr) and Conditt.

Sure the game has changed in that most teams like to play 3 guards and a small power forward. But a lot of the guys from the below list were damn good 3 point shooters and could play 4 in a Steve Prohm small-ball offense.

ISU 4/5 players since 2000 pretty much chronological:
  • Rancik
  • Shirley
  • Pearson
  • Vroman
  • Homan
  • Clark
  • Hubalek
  • Brackins
  • Gilstrap
  • Vanderbeken
  • White
  • Ejim
  • Clyburn
  • Niang
  • Hogue
  • McKay
  • Burton
The above list doesn't include some talented guys who were at ISU for a cup of coffee (like Lard): Taggart, Denby, Hamilton and Godfrey

If I would rank where Prohm's recruit fit in the 2000 to 2020 list of post players, they would all be near the bottom.

Didn’t Iowa go on a 24-7 run with Garza on the bench until halftime?

I'd have to check, but iirc CSP's teams tend to not finish the half strong, or come out very well after halftime.

Last night was definitely that.

I'll spare you looking that up....you're right. It drives me insane how many games get away from us between the under 4 timeout in the first half and the under 16 in the 2nd.

Because we can't afford to fire him. I am to the point now I'm tired of it. I was a Prohm defender for along time now. But I'm over it. TJ has a couple players in UNLV's 2021 Class I would love to have along with Hunter if TJ could talk him into staying.

What are the expectations for Iowa State in basketball? Tournament appearances each year? Tournament championships every couple years? Fast, exciting basketball? Turning out NBA players? Beating in-state rivals? I honestly don’t know what the expectations should be.

Top to bottom, the Big 12 has some serious coaching talent and Prohm’s resume is 9th out of 10 and is ahead of only Boynton. Depending on your expectations each year, Prohm might check one of your boxes.

I was thinking about this today. The reality is we’re going to be a cycling program that recruits well.
