To me this time around you need a person who has built a program (preferably two programs) at a lower level. This is no longer a “maintain” situation this will be a full rebuild.
That list will look like this:
Joe Golding, Abilene Christian
Ryan Odom, UMBC
Scott Nagy, Wright State
Darian DeVries, Drake
Brian Wardle, Bradley,
Niko Medved, Colorado State
TJ Oztelberger, UNLV
Craig Smith, Utah State
I think there are 3 coaches on that list I would consider: Smith, Oztelberger and DeVries.
Assuming Jamie Pollard is the AD that hires our next basketball coach, I think as fans we have a pretty good blueprint of the type of person he will hire. He is not going to hire a coach who has off court scandal in his past or who doesn't develop his players as people or value the academic aspect of college athletics. Aka he is not going to hire a guy like Kelvin Sampson if Kelvin begged to come to ISU for $1/year.
IMO Pollard has learned something with each successful and unsuccessful hire he has made. I think one lesson from the Prohm hiring has been it helps to have a coach with strong ties in the upper Midwest and can recruit effectively within a 6 hour radius of Ames.
I also think with the current social justice environment, there will be a lot of emphasis at
seriously considering a black man as the next head coach at ISU. Not saying ISU must hire a black coach, but I would expect Jamie will have 1 or 2 qualified black coaches among his top 3-4 candidates.
Others have mentioned Mark Turgeon and Thad Boyle and they would definitely be worth a call to garner interest in a new challenge. Other guys who have been successful at a P5 school, but might be interested in a new challenge could be: Matt Painter, Nate Oates or Anthony Grant.
Lastly, I would think JP would be wise to look among assistants at Baylor, KU, Tech, etc. to see if there is a candidate who understands the Big12.
