I’d take a decade of what those two have given their current programs

A decade would be a lot for an ISU coach

Prohm - year 6
Hoiberg - 5 years
McDermott - 4 years
Morgan - 3 years
Eustachy - 5 years
Floyd - 4 years
Orr - 14 years
Nance - 4 years
Trickey - 2 years

I believe that fans here need to get over the idea that a coaching hire is a lifetime deal.
It's a short relationship. We all have fun (or not) with the program, and we all move along. It just isn't any more than that.

I think if you are going to pay Matta or Beilein then perhaps you just go get Altman.

How seriously did we pursue Altman in '03 after the LE fiasco? I remember he was one of the names mentioned, and he was at the top of my personal list, but I remember a vocal fan or two being adamantly against him for whatever reasons, which made no sense to me.

Using the $3m buyout as a baseline for what ISU power brokers could get together for a buyout - here are some coaches on this list i would like to see targeted

Mark Turgeon $350k buyout
Dana Altman $3m buyout
Lon Kruger $500k buyout
Bobby Hurley $2.5m buyout
Tad Boyle $500k buyout

Tad Boyle is a hell of a coach and has done a really nice job at a non-basketball school at Colorado. Might be hard to get him out of Boulder (a really cool city), but he might be worth the attempt.

It's a short relationship. We all have fun (or not) with the program, and we all move along. It just isn't any more than that.

But, at a school like Iowa State, with a good but not blue-blood tradition, I don't feel that we can sustain having a revolving door of coaches that only stay here for an average of 4-5 years and still maintain a level of success that fans expect and/or demand. The rate of coaching turnover we've had since Johnny Orr (RIP) is just ridiculous.

At the same time I don't think you hold onto a coach that clearly isn't working just for the sake of holding onto a coach (no matter how good of a recruiter he might be). It's a fine line for sure.

And I know that we have disagreed about Prohm (at times sharply) before. I want it to work for him, and I want him to work out, but at this point it's just not working, and I am okay with making a change at the end of the season if things continue on their current trajectory. It sucks, but unless we undertake a drastic and unexpected turnaround, it's time to cut our losses. We've reached a point of diminishing returns.

Well, we'll have to find a way. That door's gonna keep revolving.

If a guy is here 5 years and restores the program to the point it would be an appealing job for his successor, I'd take it. I'm afraid right now we don't have much to sell as a program, as whoever comes in has a big task ahead of him to clean up this mess.

Next guy needs to be shown clips of Hilton in the 90s and parts of the 2000s and early 2010's and let it be known that if they get ISU back to that with tourneys on the regular, life will be good.

Doesn't have to be high flying stuff. Floyd and Eustachy showed that.

I think the teenagers you recruit might have pretty short memories but the men up for P6 head coaching jobs have had long careers in the field and understand this wider context. We have plenty to sell to them --

-- Hilton is one of the premier arenas in the country when it is rockin'
-- our fan base is intense, dedicated, and patient, and they travel well (especially to Kansas City)
-- our administration is pretty patient (look at the leash they're giving Prohm)
-- we have lots of NBA players to point to now, and we didn't in 2010
-- we play in the best conference in the country year-to-year

Plenty there to sell an up-and-coming mid-major coach or a P6 assistant who wants his own shot.
