My take after watching yesterday and sleeping on it:

125 - True Fr Kysen Terukina - Looked good (not great) but again, he's a TRUE Freshman --- I remember how good Alex Thompson & Brody Teske were as a Seniors in HS (compared to other HS competitors) and they've both had a full year of college to develop. There are levels and huge jumps that have to be made from HS to college. However, I can see why the coaches are so excited about this kid. I think he can take huge steps this year and I'm super excited about his future given this year of growth and learning how to compete with top level (DI). He can be scary good.

125 - B Team: I also think Alex Mackall should not have lost to Brody Teske. I love the fact that the coaches are letting the winner in the room earn the starting spot. I also love that both Teske & Alex put it on the line yesterday. Congrats to Brody Teske (and UNI fans) for two hard fought come from behind victories. Impressive to say the least. I'm cheering for Alex to continue to improve for us.

133 - Zach Redding - I have the same thoughts on youth and his future as 125. I'm very excited about ZR's future. As excited as I am about ZR I was equally disappointed in the way Small looked. Maybe the weight cut got to him but he didn't even start aggressive. He looked slow and sluggish to me. Hope it's the cut and he can settle in at 133 and keep getting better.

141 - Ian gave up an early TD & back points which put him in a hole. I'm not worried and I think he'll use this as a lesson to improve this year. It also kept the momentum with Missouri which might be the biggest effect on the night.

149 - True FR Cam Robinson. He looked GREAT against the #3 guy in the country. I know he lost, but he give himself a chance to win. I just hope he's not hurt too bad... I also hope Degen can return soon and have be healthy for the remainder of the season.

157 - Carr looked great!

165 - Grant Stotts looked good right up until he got cradled and pinned. I want to see more of him. This is a weaker spot this year and my expectations are not as high for Grant or Isaac.

174 - I'm probably most concerned with Julien. I also have to remind myself that he's a RS FR. I'm thinking he was in panic mode already based upon how this season has started and the fact that the team was in trouble when his turn came. I feel like he was trying to do too much to help the team. Coach Dresser keeps saying the right things to give him confidence but it's easy to tell someone to have confidence and really hard for someone to actually have that confidence. I'm rooting for Julien and hope that he can get his season turned around. I do think he's our best guy at 174.

184 - Tate Battani disappointed me here. I was hoping he could keep up his offense but he tied up to throw and then looked very uncomfortable. He hasn't thrown all year (that I can remember). That tells me that he wasn't working his positions or getting to his preferred offense. I'm not ready to write him off and want to see some more from him against quality competition. I do wonder how healthy Colbray is.

197 - I'm super excited for our Cuban! Unlike a few other posters I think the coaches made the best decision by having him choose down and learn how it feels to be tired and have to escape. This is the best way for him to learn. I think it's obvious that Yonger was far superior on his feet and in March can be a bit more patient on his shots and build a bigger lead, manage his match pace better and improve from the bottom position. This was a great lesson for him against a top recruit. We were already losing the dual so my complements to the coaches to put his development ahead of winning a meaningless match.

Hwt - Gannon continues to show his development and he wrestles with great pace. Keep it up!

The future is bright and I predict this team will come into it's own by March... We do need to learn to win the toss-ups. Unfortunately, we lost every toss up last night. I'm really hoping Degen will come back healthy. Thanks for reading and all of the great takes on Cyclone Wrestling! I enjoy this forum. Go Cyclones!

@jcordova8 did I miss in the post presser about asking the injury on Cam?
The answer was that we'd know more today! I asked after the press conference was over because I forgot to ask during.

Will ask for full injury updates at 11:45 for the weekly press conference.

I understand the best way to improve is to execute when tired, but there is a difference between tired and absolutely gassed. He was tired at the end of the first period. I can't recall a single thing he did in the 3rd period that he can learn from/build off for next time. He couldn't even keep his head off the mat. The only thing he learned was he needs to be in better wrestling shape, which was learned sometime in the 2nd period I assume.

I also am not terribly upset with the results of what we put on the mat yesterday. Several freshmen lost in freshman ways. My concern is that we put out exactly 4 wrestlers that we expected to be in the starting lineup when the season started. Some are due to injuries, some are due to performance and some may be a combination, but my expectations have changed.

I was looking at the rankings. 125 is very weak. Coming into the year I could see Mackall beating anyone not named Spencer Lee on a given night. No disrespect to KT or BT, but neither have any collegiate experience to speak of and now Alex can't beat either. 133 is stacked, but I thought Small or RA could scrap to a R12 or low AA (a healthy Gomez certainly would have but I wasn't counting on that). As impressive as Reading has been, I don't have that same expectation for him. 149 is similar to 125 in that I think Deagan could hang with/beat 1-10 (also could lose to any of those). Will we get to see a healthy Jarrett all year? Time will tell.

Similar questions at 174, 184 & 197, to a bit lesser extent, but I'm tired of typing. Hope the lineup gets solidified and the youngsters progress rapidly.

That meet on Sunday may or may not have driven me to the bottle...or maybe that was just because I didn't have to work Monday.

I'd say I'm not so much worried about the team this season based on that meet as I am just disheartened by the results of that day. Being the unapologetic homer I am, I found myself disappointed match after match (other than Carr and Gremmel).

There's an irrational part of me that truly believes our guys have the ability to beat the world, and watching those matches took a lot of wind out of my sails. Just a lot of high hopes that had to come back down to earth.

That said, the young guys definitely looked solid and will be fine. Parker I'm sure is kicking himself more than anything and will be a man on even more of a mission. Yonger will be incredible once his lungs are where they need to be and he figures out mat wrestling.

All in all, I'm looking forward to the team improving and raising my head back into the clouds. It's a way better view up there.

Take a deep breath and realize that the lineup trotted out there was half backups, based on what was known (or assumed) coming into the season.

125 - Mackall, Cabanban, Terukina
133 - Gomez, Small, Attasauov, Redding
149 - Degen, Robinson
184 - Colbray, Shapiro, Battani
197 - Coleman, Bastida

I keep seeing this take and I don't get it.

Terukina has beat Mackall twice now.
Redding--better than Small and Ram
Robinson-not far of a drop off from Degen
Battani-not far of a drop off from Colbray 80% of the time
Coleman lost to the Mizzou backup.

Terukina, Redding, Robinson are studs. They are the lineup for now. And Battani is far exceeding any expectations too.

Because people are still using preseason expectations as a measuring stick, even though half the lineup is different now than it was then.

5 returning NCAA qualifiers are currently on the shelf for one reason or another. That makes a difference, even if you think that some of the backups are "not far of a drop off."

I somewhat agree. 25 and 33 are our starters. They are the best guys we have. Bastida is very likely our best 97.

however, don’t think you have any basis to say that about Degen and Colbray. Degen is an AA and Colbray is 100% at AA level. Robinson has potential, but all he’s done is beaten a couple D2 and D3 guys. There is no possible way you could think he’s that close to Degen’s potential. Same with Battani.

I think the only basis to say Robinson is not far off would be the result of the wrestle off with Degen. Did Cam wrestle Mauller tough on Sunday? Yeah I would say so, but hell Ryan Leisure wrestled a 4-2 match with Mauller last year in the dual. One thing is for certain we need Colbray back in the lineup.

A 3 time NCAA qualifier, R12 guy (beat by a known staller that ended up stalling against him to win), an AA, & then ranked 8 going into last years NCAA & had an amazing path to AA again with a MESSED UP shoulder. (Personally, think he was robbed in his IA & UNI matches when his tank was still full & they kept taking time out while they refueled during breaks.) His back up is not far of a drop off? We will have to agree to disagree on that one, Robinson will be good.

But why though?

The way you say "that lineup trotted out" makes it sound like we have no business being on the mat.

2/5 are not in it the lineup because they got beat.

Coleman was hurt, but I personally don't see him beating Bastida. Do you?

Yes we need Colbray as his ceiling is still very high, and I have much higher hopes at 84.

And yes Degen is better than Robinson

I'm not attacking Degen at all. If I was betting $ I would have taken Degen for a DEC because he has beaten Mauller before. But its more of a tossup than a lock.

Which is what I mean by not far off.

I think Kysen can get to where I expected Mackall to be preseason (6-8 AA), but a R12 year would be phenomenal for a true frosh. 133 I expected we’d have Gomez. Redding is really good (and probably the best option at 133), but he isn’t at the level Gomez would’ve been at 133. At 149, Robinson does have a ton of potential but There is a definite drop off with Degen out of the lineup. Keep in mind these guys wrestle each other everyday which leads to tighter wrestle off matches. Battani is fine at 184, but there’s a bigggg drop off between him and Colbray. Need to get Sammy back. At 197, I think Bastida has a lower floor than Coleman but also a higher ceiling. Coleman was probably a 2-2 type guy at NCAAs. Bastida could be anywhere from a 0-2 to potential AA.

25 - I feel a lot better with Alex out there. He’s been there and done it in a lot of ways. There’s no substitute for experience. I hope he can find a way to beat Kysen. If not, then it is what it is and Kysen will get a lot of good experience. But I do think expections need to come down a little.

41 - Were not going to be in good shape in any dual with a team worth its salt if Ian gets beat. Just the way it is.

49 - Degen sounds like it’s a matter of time. That will be a huge shot in the arm but more is needed than just him.

84 - I believe Sammy needs to get back and get back soon. I could be wrong but I think he’s the kind of kid that needs some matches under his belt before he hits his optimal level of preformance. The longer he rides pine, the longer it will be before we get top gear, AA caliber Sammy.

97 - So many huddles before the Cuban can hit his folk style stride. It’s hard to wait because we all see the sky potential. Similar to the young kids, be patient, it will come. Just need mat time and learn from the lumps.

hwt - I don’t think Gannons match gets enough air time around here. I thought he looked great. At times in past years, you see him being almost too patient. Sunday he pushed the action and has his hair on fire at times. This was great to see. He keeps up that “want too” attitude and he’s gonna do great things.

Isn’t COVID essentially a throw away year? I can see why the coaches don’t want to chance anything on year that possibly won’t hurt eligibility.
