125- Kysen will learn from this and get better. I would say Mackall should be the guy going forward, but Mackall got beat by Teske in the other matches so who knows. Regardless I went from thinking we have an AA 125 to it’ll be an uphill battle to AA.

133- Redding will be fine. Lost to a top 15 kid on a last second takedown. Learn from it and get him next time.

141- disappointed in Ian. If he truly wants to be a title contender you can’t have these losses. That being said, I trust Ian to peak come March and not too worried about the loss.

149- just hoping Cam’s injury isn’t too serious. Had some great scrambles with Mauller

157- wasn’t Carr’s best match and it was still a comfortable major against a top 12 kid. David is a stud

165- like Stotts fight and think he’s the guy here going forward. Just have to avoid the cradle

174- I get he’s a “go big or go home” guy, but I’d love to see him stay solid next week and hit singles, doubles, high crotches. Stay solid and have the big move ready when it’s there. Lot of learning to do though

184- gotta get Sammy back. Tate is a solid room guy, but Sammy beats that Mizzou kid 9 times out of 10

197- why on earth do you have Yonger go down in the third? Just a stupid coaching move. However, as has been said, watch out once he learns freestyle rules. Also disappointed that Coleman lost to Koeling. That’s a guy Marcus needs to beat if he wants the 197 spot back

hwt- Gremmel just hammered Elam. Bright spot from the dual for me

while the results overall were disappointing, its only January and we were missing at least 2 starters. Plenty of time to correct mistakes before March

Seen Broderson wrestle since middle school. What you suggest is something he never had tendencies to do. He has always been a thrower from what I’ve seen of him.

This could be a learning dual. There’s still a lot of wrestling left. They got rocked by a better okie st team last year then turned it around. This year it was Mizzou who’s no okie st but we didn’t have so many freshman there either. Things can change. There were positives. Will be interesting to see how it plays out

Missing 3 national qualifiers, and 2 more who are stuck on the B team at the moment.

So, I'm not going to get too bent out of shape about today's results.

Casual wrestling fans always overreact to duals. There are a lot of factors at play, and a dual in January with a bunch of freshmen isn't anything to get too worked up about.
Agreed. Young guys are taking their lumps and learning their lessons. Excited to see how they react and get better. They now have some tape to improve on things in the room. Still lots of time to get better before March.

The younger Elam brother is no slouch. Was ranked #1 in the country at 195 in high school last year. Like Dresser said, Yonger is still learning folkstyle.
He is a stud. I like Dresser's response to why they put him down and think he made the right call. He's got to learn somehow and maybe looking back it could've been the wrong time to learn, but gotta deal with it and get better.

I liked it too. He’s gotta learn. We weren’t gonna win the dual at that point anyway

Once Bastida has a solid year of folkstyle under his belt he will be a force. Won't have to work as hard trying to get takedown after takedown. In hindsight what he did today vs. Elam was pretty impressive considering he didn't attempt to ride him or know how to effectively get out from bottom.

The Cuban is going to lose matches like that due to his background. That will get corrected.
It can only get better. I thought he was further along than what he showed honestly. Being rode the whole 3rd period with your forehead on the mat and still be absolutely clueless you lost? When he gassed he went back to old habits (i.e. bellying out at the whistle). Of course there is a conditioning/strategy problem as well, Dresser described it as a cultural thing. He can't be coming out of the gates firing off 5 shots in the first period with his conditioning, coaches need to tell him that. I think slow matches would be to his benefit. After the match St. John had to drag him behind the curtain because he physically couldn't walk/run. As for choosing down to start the 3rd and losing the match, that's on Dresser. He was already gassed. What did you expect? Yes he needs to get better in the down position, practice it in the room until you have confidence he can execute it in a match.

Agreed. Also, I don’t blame him for getting gassed. He’s made enormous life changes and is essential competing at a high level is a sport he’s not entirely ever played before. Conditioning can get corrected easily and knowing what I know about the staff and other kids in that room, if the Cuban listens and does what’s expected, that won’t be a problem long term. If it is, it could be a combo of the whole acclimation thing and him not understanding what it takes to train. But I would guess we don’t see that as a problem long term.

throwers are gonna throw, they can’t help it
I would bet he’s gonna stick a kid that he “shouldn’t beat” at some point with a throw and it will be awesome. That said, there’s some changes to his approach that need to probably be corrected. He’s young. I’m guessing he will be ok.

The end result was ugly, but I think we can still be encouraged by a few things. My thoughts

- The true freshman look the part. Terukina, Redding and Robinson all hung in there with ranked guys
- Yonger got to his offense so easily against Elam, it's easy to see the upside. Clearly just needs the gas tank and folkstyle familiarity to come along and obviously in March he's not going down in that situation
- Carr/Gremmel looked fantastic. Particularly impressed by Gremmel and how nasty he wrestles, he's come a long way
- Not worried about Ian, keeps to have a head scratcher ever year... the 19-4 tech by demas last year, loss to Willits in '19... he's going to be fine
- Stotts/Battani are going to fight, but clearly under matched. Need Colbray back and 165 is just going to be an issue all season which we knew
- Broderson we'll need to see come along as the season goes on, hopefully it's just getting used to 174 and of course we know he's going to go big and sometime that bites you, especially against a funky guy like Mocco
