I saw this and went to the T-rank website that often gets cited on here and ran a filter for all of the "High Major" conferences there. We are exactly the 5th worst Power 5 team (plus at least the American conference) this season.

I don't consider the AAC high major, but that only means it's worse than I actually think considering it's including teams like Tulsa and Tulane are on this "high major" list.

Kind of funny how bad KSU is in their rankings. Man they must have some bad metrics because they are like 50 spots behind us.

Side note, our defensive rebound rate is 337th and our Free throw rate is 347th. That's basically two things good teams do. I was right, only 347 teams, we're dead last in the country at getting to the line.

What about this fun stat: Iowa State hasn't won an away game in almost 2 whole years. February 16, 2019 against KSU.

We play one non conference road game a year. I'm not surprised we've went winless on the road in conference play with bad teams.

Whatever happened to the team that beat Seton Hall? I thought it gave us some hope after holding our own against good teams in the Bahamas. Might be the best game I’ve seen Conditt play.

Then they followed it up with that performance against Iowa
I feel like that Seton Hall game last year in Hilton was the final glimpse of hope before the program officially died. They were a good team last year.

Yeah. That same team (well, without TH after his wrist injury) got smoked by Texas Tech by 30 points later on in the same season. Texas Tech was decent last year, but not as good as that Seton Hall team, and certainly not good enough to beat us by 30.

I've wondered about that, too. Up thru the SH hall home game it went about how I expected, like maybe not tournament potential but didn't anticipate horrible upset losses and blowout losses that followed.

Yeah, that was a good win for that team, especially after the near miss against Michigan at Atlantis. It should have been something they could build off of, but then they went the opposite direction

Didn't they have the Big East POY also? I remember us keeping him in check.

Yeah, they smoked Alabama in that tournament also and now look at where Alabama is. Its weird how teams can go in opposite directions like that a year later.

I think a few things happened to us (as well as Conditt).

1. Teams figured out our offense which was essentially Tyrese getting a high ball screen from Conditt and playing off it. Once teams figured out that we had zero shooters, they'd sag off and help on that PnR. With shooters and another ball handler that's even half as good as Tyrese, that offense is crazy good. Obviously we had neither.

2. We played with a ton of emotion in that game and only matched that emotion a few more times during the year.

3. Conditt was a huge factor in how good we could be on both ends of the floor, however when he was taken away from being good offensively, he diminished on the defensive end. Conditt is a HUGE head case. He freaks out on both ends of the court. Him being a head case has also affected his ability to set a screen without moving, which causes his offensive usage to diminish, which leads him to shoot it whenever he touches it down low.

If I remember correctly that Seton Hall game was not exactly a gem of a game. They lost their best big early on, played very poorly and still almost won.

I just pulled the shooting percentages and...woof:

  • Field Goal %
    • HALL36.8
    • 38.3ISU
  • Three Point %
    • HALL26.7
    • 21.1ISU

It was an ugly grind it out game, but still a win against a good team.

Myles Powell? Yeah, and he scored 19 points, but needed a lot of shots to do it. Here's the T rank box score from that game. George Conditt's best game in a Cyclone uniform.

Yeah, thats right. I was looking at those games and we played Seton Hall tough both of those games. I dont know what happened after that, we got destroyed by Iowa, then Florida A&M happened, and I think we lost to TCU on some horrible coaching or something, after that it just snowballed out of control.

I mean sure. But I guess I don't view it as some great high that we declined from. It was an ugly game we were fortunate to win.

That’s not the point I was making. It was a good enough win that it should’ve been a confidence booster for the young guys and something to build from. But instead they got skullf*cked by Iowa and lost to FAMU. And here we are.

I think the combination of getting blown out Iowa, having the worst loss in school history vs. FAMU, and TCU banking in a 3 at the buzzer were soul crushing losses that essentially sent the season into a spiral.

It sucks but good coaches don't allow those combination of things to happen imo.
