What? You want us spend $10 mil on a buyout for Fred Hoiberg?

There any infinitely better uses of $10 million including hiring coaches that are actually worthy of that money.

I know this is just talk.....but if there was a way, the reason I WOULD be okay with Fred again even though I was disappointed in how he left is because the story line is still there. And although he had it tough in Chicago, and now at Nebraska...he was a resounding success here. I just think all that would trump any bad stories and make it an easy sell to any recruit. And I think he is one coach who could keep most of any talent(Foster)in Ames. IMO it would be a win/win.

I am a basketball fan, but know little about the details of play. It seems we have recruited some bigs but they never pan out. We recruit gaurds and a few forwards and they do all right. I am of the opinion our bigs are not coached well at all. If they are we are under recruiting. (except Foster).

When head coaching searches come up, it always seems like there is a group of fans who think ISU fans only want a coach who plays an exciting offensive style.

I understand why some people feel that way because two of ISU's most successful and beloved coaches ARE Johnny Orr and Fred Hoiberg. But I guarantee if Bo Ryan was hired after Tim Floyd and had similar success to that at Wisky- Cyclone fans love defensive basketball! Same goes for Virginia.

That said, it isn't an either or situation. Great teams play great offense and great defense. Look around the Big 12- KU, WVU, TT and Baylor all play great defense and play an exciting style of offense. In fact, a lot of times playing great defense leads to turnovers which leads to fast break points.

IMO our next coach should bring a focus on defense, toughness, rebounding and a fun offense to watch.
How about one of the above?

Who is this Golding you write of?
Abilene Christian head coach. 8th year there. Started program from scratch. Last three years they are competing for championships in the Southland against Stephen F. Austin.
Great defensive club. Top 30 in the country in forcing turnovers each of the last five years. Top 10 the last three years including first this year creating a turnover on 28.6% of possessions. 45 years old. Strong ties to Texas and southwest.
If we hire him at least we have an identity for the program and I think that type of pressure defense certainly would play in Hilton Coliseum.

Actually there were pretty strong rumors that Fred wanted the job back.

This rumor often gets repeated, but nobody on here has claimed it was true through insider knowledge nor has it ever been hinted at or implied by CW and the beat writers. So color me skeptical about that being the case.

Think it's also worth noting if Fred did come back now, he'd be leaving Nebraska's program in tatters. Would be pretty redeeming in my book.

I'd give my left nut for this to happen.

How about the assistant at Gonzaga?

From ESPN: Brian Michaelson, Gonzaga assistant (38)
Has been in the Gonzaga family since 2000, when he joined the basketball team as a walk-on. He returned to Mark Few's program in 2008 and eventually became an assistant coach under Few in 2013. Michaelson has quietly been a key part of the Bulldogs' recruiting success over the past several seasons, and he led the charge for 2020 guard Jalen Suggs, Gonzaga's highest-ranked recruit ever. --

Altman isn’t leaving Oregon for ISU with a pay cut. His new contract has his making $3.3 this year, $3.5 next, and $3.75 mil in 2 years. And he’s at Oregon.
I love how our fan base (correctly) points out how dumb it is to think Campbell would go to MSU or Tennessee but then suggests Oats or Altman as legitimate coaching options at ISU.

Just an observation today, the difference between coaches that win...and ours

They took the challenge and met it head on.

FWIW CSP did a similar thing in the first round B12 tourney game in 2017 after weird call involving Monte. He let Morris go crazy for a couple of possessions. Perhaps the buy in was different so it worked.

There was an earlier game where Howard had to leave the huddle in a time out because him and a player got into it so badly. Not a great look initially but we've seen Coach Izzo do the same at times and that type of conflict is part of the relationship piece that players and coaches have to get through a situation together.

Honest question, does anyone think Fred could replicate that kind of success here again if by a miracle he's the next coach?

Hes been gone 6 years now and it's a completely different game.
He could, but it likely wouldn't be a one year turnaround like last time around. He has a solid class coming in next season at Nebraska, so it's not like he can't recruit.

Yes. One could argue the transfer market is even deeper now. And he would be a proven commodity this time around. Last time, he had never coached a single college game when he came.
