Fred gave the program one of the best stretches in history and then set up the next guy with a ready made roster for 2 years. I'll take that kind of screwing all day.
For 2 million a year I'd sign up for that the rest of my life.

I think this is a bit diminishing of Fred's resume here no?

How so?

On the scope of ISU basketball, they were some of the best.

On the scope of overall college basketball, they were nice teams. 2nd/3rd in conference, played well in the B12 tourney a couple of years, got to a Sweet Sixteen. That's a nice stretch.

That story always seemed like a stretch to me. Was his name mentioned? Maybe sure. Was he Fred’s top choice? I think not.
It was more likely that he was asked about coaches he liked or maybe even asked about coaches on a list and Prohm was someone Fred said good things about. I don’t think it was ever Fred saying to hire Prohm like some made it out to be.

TJ was Pollard's guy.

Prohm was Fred's guy.

Leath wanted ISU to get the biggest brand name name they could.

CR Gazette column on the search. Pollard main source.
From the article :

As for Hoiberg, the fact he named Prohm as someone to consider doesn’t mean Otzelberger wasn’t his first preference to be his successor. But he kept his thoughts on that private rather than potentially muddy things for his former boss.

This team would have been garbage with or without covid. Its why some of us were saying he should have been out last year.

Sure it was no good. Giving him some room because of protocols doesn't change that anymore than it excuses T.J. blowing chow at UNLV this year.

I could have coached that first team to the tourney. Get the **** out of here.
Oh I've been very vocal about Steve's time here, including that they could've pulled a high school coach and gotten to the NCAA tournament in year one.

I was saying Fred did put this program into a tough position by holding out for as long as he did. Fred knew he was gone months prior to him announcing he was leaving and because of that, stopped recruiting as well as hindered JP's ability to do a full coaching search..

What about last year for Prohm? Or 3 years ago? Prohm may have gotten a pass for a bad/mediocre season this year. But this is setting up to be historically bad all around. Why should he get a pass after that?

He's 18-47 in conference play with his own players. Let's not pretend like this is some crazy exception year for Steve Prohm at Iowa State.

No one is giving him a pass this year. The only time I bring it up is when I hear people giving T.J. a pass. Why not everyone? And stop with the three years ago.

Personally I have a lot of love for 2019. I went to Maui and my kids got pictures with the players on the team. I've got a picture of them next to Haliburton and sitting on the shoulders of some of the guys. I was in KC again for the Tourney win. They were up and down but they were young, likable, and talented and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Your posts from KC seemed to indicate you were having fun.

It's fair to say it was the best. There's nothing wrong with that at all.

Depends what our definition of “best” is

Larry was the best in that he produced the championships and accomplishments no one else has.

Fred was the best in that he produced the most consistent stretch of winning basketball we’ve seen.

Oh I certainly would again. I meant that Fred put us in a tough spot in finding the next coach. Thibs was fired May 28th and Fred was named head coach 5 days later. He knew the job was coming open for months. That hurt us.

He didnt know months in advance. If the Bulls arent idiots and fire their coach after their playoff run Hoiberg would have stayed at Iowa State at least another year. He wasnt just going to jump ship at any NBA job that year, the perfect situation came up for him.

"Perfect situation" is an interesting characterization. Other than it being one of the better historic franchises in the NBA, it was a horrible situation. Incompetent management and one of the NBAs oldest, worst rosters.

It wasn't a sure thing that the Bulls job was going to be open, but there were whispers it could happen and during that time, Fred started to have one foot out the door. Yes, the Bulls were essentially the only job he was going to take.

From that perspective, yes it sounds awful, but the Bulls job was Hoiberg's home run.

Talking about what ifs, that 2013 game against OSU in the tourney was a total screw job. ISU should have been up 3 or 4 and instead the horrible college refs once again called a charge instead of a block.

Way up there

So you think TJ's struggling in year 2 of a total rebuild that he had nothing to do with is comparable to Steve struggling in year 6 at a program that he drove to the cellar?

Prohm does get some benefit to it being a Covid year. It just is that this being a Covid year can’t overcome how bad it is. TJ is going to get docked for this year. It just is one down year in an otherwise great resume. Prohm has multiple down years on top of this year.

Your acting like people are just completely throwing out this year. No one is doing that.
