He wasn't an assistant like a regular assistant.

"When I agreed to join Fred at Nebraska as Special Assistant, there was positive momentum in the NCAA for allowing an additional person to actively coach during practice and games. That has not happened."
So he wasn’t even on the bench for games or coaching at practice? I didn’t know that. I wonder if TJ offered him an actual assistant coach position, he would take it?

Prohm never seemed to have concrete ideas, just spoke with cliche after cliche.

If TJ can give thoughtful answers in post game interviews and if he can keep the ball from sticking in a players hands for long stretches, I'm in
His mentor McD had a thesis in the postgame for why his teams lost. Great basketball mind when in hindsight.

TJ can tell us to “**** off, I’m busy” in the postgame if he gets some foresight into the game plan.

Why did TJ leave for Washington back in the day?

I believe it was to gain experience with a different coach and recruiting/professional connections to help him get set up for a HC job.
Speculation: The thought when came back to Ames to be groomed under Fred to be ISU HC when T.J. left. Fred left a little earlier than expected and though Pollard wanted to give the job to T.J. but Leath stepped in leading to Prohm.
The time is now for the T.J. Era.

I remember at the time there was some talk that he wanted to be a HC but only ever having been at Iowa State was a knock against him. This was at the time Phelps retired from Drake and Otz interviewed but they hired Giacoletti instead. He left for Washington after that.

Many already in the surrender cobra position...not even giving them a shot. Many on here were crapping on the school when Fred was hired.

After boosting the football staff salaries, COVID reductions, etc. there just isn't the option of spending big $'s. Hell, our annual athletic revenue is $56M smaller than Iowa's...the difference alone is 2/3rd's of our entire revenue stream. Hard to even compete with that.

So Jamie went with someone that is familiar with the university, isn't going to cost an arm and a leg, and could even succeed. Should Jamie have gone with a hot mid-major? The Utah State coach is already in a bidding war between Minnesota and Utah, both of which have greater revenue streams than Iowa State. How about an assistant coach...high risk/reward. Jamie pushed the easy button and the program can now move forward.
I largely agree with what you wrote, but if COVID hadn’t happened it’s still likely Prohm would have been gone. In this alternate reality and without the COVID hole in the budget, isn’t it likely TJ still gets the job at a hometown discount.

I'd encourage actually watching this video. Its got kind of a weird vibe

The subtext of the video is that the main criteria to coach at ISU under Jamie is to be super-psyched to be a Cyclone and the rest of it is argumentation around that point.

Also the odd wording that makes it sound like interested coaches who "wanted to think about it" and were not ready to leave their teams immediately were not really considered because of the importance of hitting the ground running right away. That basically eliminates any of the coaches in the tournament I guess. That tells you pretty much all you need to know about the manner of which they scoured the globe to find the right guy.

I would have preferred he just say he knew exactly who he wanted and was determined to get him at any cost, because I bet that's closer to what actually happened.

One positive I think most if not all Cyclone fans are in favor of us running an honest program, despite all the cheating and payoffs that the NCAA does nothing about. I don't know TJ at all, just his reputation, but I think we can safely assume he will be fair and honest the way we want. Tough to compete against the liars and cheaters but that is what the Iowa State job requires and so Coach Otz fits that bill.

Also, I can't imagine anyone would work harder to succeed here than he will. Plus having a spouse that likely wants to be here, that helps. So, I think this can work, let's give it a chance.

Why do we think an ace recruiter and the former unlv coach is 100% above board?

There’s plenty of rumors that brackins got money here.

And it’s fine if he’s not! That’s good!

They were in the second year of a big rebuild. And they were able to beat Kansas State. Prohm couldn't do that in his 6th year. I am convincing myself to like this hire.
It might actually be a fine hire. We'll know when he fills out his bench. Gotta have a post and rebounding expert. Many of us are just upset with the process and Jamie's arrogance. If Otz works out, he might be our version of Drew at Baylor. That's what I want, Hoiball with some rebounding and decent defense.

I think some of you people whose posts I just cheerfully marked “dumb” are missing a crucial point. Something that Jamie slipped into that video. Separating the wheat from the chaff of all the stuff on that video.

They reached out to a lot of candidates. Their camps said “no thanks”.

Why? That’s easy to explain.

Remember when Tim Floyd was hired? All of that returning talent was an enticement. That’s the whole reason Johnny was nudged out when he was.

Coaches want to go where they can have either immediate success, or success fairly quickly. This roster doesn’t offer much promise of that.

Mainly, because it was set up for Prohm’s four guard system. Second, because the new coach will really need to rerecruit Tyrese Hunter (and Nunn) to help solve those turnover issues. Those ain’t just gonna go away.

Yep, the roster issue goes on more than that, but that’s the main reason. Oh, and a tight salary package available to offer. Jamie slipped that in there, too.

T.J. Is different because he’s willing to take on the risk of that first year hit. The challenge it indicates. Because he knows exactly what Iowa State and Ames, Iowa has to offer.

And that’s the reason he’s the right guy for the job right now.

Go Cyclones!
