He's got to show something in year 1. Not a tourney bid or anything but competence and effort would be great. That would go for any coach we hired.

Yep. Year 1 of hoiberg we were bad, but you could see the identity building even if we didn't have the horses to execute it.

I think that's what people will be looking for. Improvement and some kind of identity for the program.

Yeah this is not true. Lol
I've read from multiple places online UNLV fans saying basically what WhoIsThis said. Say what you will about their fan base's expectations or whatever, but I'd like to hear why we on an Iowa State board would know better.

I know nothing about the state of the UNLV basketball program 3 years ago. You seem to have some knowledge of it. That's why I asked. Fill us in.
It wasn’t in bad shape.

TJ was making it his program. Those self-inflicted growing pains may have been worth it if given enough time, I don’t know. Or care. JP is correct in saying we’re hiring him to win here. We aren’t in good shape- so transition slippage at UNLV isn’t too concerning. But we don’t need to suggest UNLV fans are stuck in the 80’s when they struggled more in Year 2 of TJ than the year before he was hired, and a lot of the roster turnover was reminiscent of McD.

That last part is noteworthy imo. A fine line between needing to establish your culture and have your guys, and struggling to make talent your guys.

Luckily TJ is covered by 0-18. We underperformed. Any similar pains he had at taking over UNLV won’t be easily noticed. And if he’s learned from that experience- we could be good, quickly.

I welcome TJ and support him. The decision is made and it will be known how it turns out in 3 years.

My hope is that since his wife likely wants to stay in Ames, TJ has the success and stays in Ames like Orr did and Fennlley has. I would love for TJ to be here, winning, 20 years from now, with CMC and Fennlley's son taking over the women's program. I would love to have the success that means we can afford to keep all three programs under the same coaches.

The way that happens is how TJ hires his staff, how he meets with and evaluates our current players and recruits (keeping the key pieces in tact), and who he brings in to make the team better next season.

I also realize, that under Prohm, we had several games we lost by only a few points. Can TJ get 10-15 more points per game out of the roster next year and be a little more competitive than this year. I would like to see 15 wins next year as a realistic goal, but I have not even looked at what the other teams in the Big 12 will be bringing back.

But getting things going in the upward direction and bringing in a quality staff and developing good recruits is the key.

A few of you guys need a cigarette.

what did you want to happen?

Hire a 60+ year old that's either a) not going coach much longer or b) is washed up?? Not for me. Oh? Craig Smith you say? Did he play a major hand in landing top talent to Ames Iowa?

There are 2/3 dudes that for SURE played a large part in ISU's high level of success over the past decade. One of them is now our head coach.
I wonder how many of you would be pissed if TJ kept cruising at SDSU. A program came in and offered him a substantial raise. What human being doesn't love a pay raise? Turns out, That program is a ****show. Basketball is very circumstantial. We could have 7 new players this coming season. I'll be the first to admit UNLV wasn't awesome to watch the past two seasons. The question is - was he building something? The case can be made for yes. The guy can recruit and is HIGHLY connected in the Midwest. Oh? Nobody else wanted him? Remember that HUGE line of programs we beat out for Hoiberg? TJ got players here before, and he will again.
fellas and ladies, I'll end on a positive. We will absolutely win more games by the middle of this coming December than WE DID THE ENTIRE SEASON THIS YEAR. Stay positive, test negative.

If there is a full schedule.....and he doesn't jettison the entire roster then I think 15 wins is more than achievable. Fred was 16-16 his first year with that cut up roster left from GMAC. There is more talent here(coming) than that group and if he can add to that........I can easily see 15 wins.

Because you missed the point of his post. UNLV was in a pretty decent spot three years ago, prior to TJs arrival. He was referring to that situation directly.
They finished 7th in the Mountain West and lost most of their best players. In no way were they in pretty decent shape. Maybe not horrendous shape.

Well I sure as **** hope so.

We better beat it by the second week of November. That's what SUNY-Buffalo type schools are for.

And it wouldn't have killed JP to cast a wide net. But here we are.

how do you know he didn’t gauge interest from some bigger names and they all said no thanks to even interview. At this point he might of said if going to hire a risk I’m going with a known risk. I love that so many think they know all the details of how this went down.
