Why is this so hard for people to understand? Yes, we will support TJ once the season starts, the same way we supported Prohm, Hoiberg, McDermott, Morgan, etc. Or do you guys think that those of us unhappy with the hire will cheer against the coach (and against ISU)? That is beyond dumb. Blindly supporting the hire right away does not make you a "better fan".

However, it still does not change the fact that the "hiring process" was an absolute sham. If you think that the process had been going on for weeks/months and many candidates were contacted, well then JP could sell you some oceanfront property in Ames. The fact is that most schools try to hire proven winners, young up-and-comers, or seasoned veteran coaches. TJ is none of those. Look, the reality is we're hiring a coach who has been mediocre at best in worse conferences than the B12. And we expect him to make the jump to greatness in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

I hope to God he does well, because that would mean that ISU would be doing well. But I see all the mid-major coaches making the tourney, young coaches, coaches who went from big conferences to smaller ones who may want another crack at the big leagues and I think to myself: None of those coaches would want to coach in the Big12? ALL of these guys and their agents really turned down the ISU job? Are all these guys making $3-5 million a year, so we could not afford them? Again, really doubt it.

This was a lazy, cheap hire by JP to go back to his friend/guy he always wanted as head coach/friend of the program. Since we'll likely never know who interviewed and who didn't, they can say whatever they want about how extensive the process was and we'll just have to take their word for it. But if you tell me the "best candidate" was a guy with mediocre results at mid majors, don't expect me to be excited and jumping out of my seat for that.

And one more thing, being an alumni/from Iowa/or loving the program is never a pre-requisite for a head coach. Some of the best coaches are not alumni of the universities they coach. That type of connection is really overrated.

Anyway, flame away.
Well stated. And honest. Direct and to the point. Bravo!

That’s what you get when you have so many D1 level basketball coaching minds on one site. The super intense analysis like “What about Xs and Os!?!?!?” and “We need a guy that can make these kids care and hustle more!”

Feelings this.....feelings that...feelings are not facts. Nice title to hang on a public board for all to see...This forum has turned into a constant whine and gossip column for losers.

Let me start by saying I support TJ and am definitely not one of his “haters”. But I will say over the last few weeks it’s been beyond negative on here about TJ. I think some of us just need to shut our traps and give him a chance at this opportunity. People here are expecting him to fail before he even starts. It’s just sad to see all the non support of our brand new head coach. It’s sickening.

Starting A poll. I want to see if literally the majority of this board doesn’t support him, or if there is just a hand full of LOUD angry elf’s.

Please change the thread title. You have your answer.

I like the hire. Everything about it. I mean, can it be worse than zero wins in the big 12? He knows ISU. He can sell ISU and he's proven adept at it.

People rag on him because he didn't succeed at UNLV. He was in year 2 of an entire rebuild. Not everything can be immediate.

I hope after another couple of weeks people will just get it on record and out of their system that they don't like the hire, then let things fall where they may, give the guy a chance.

I'm sure we all want TJ to succeed. To me it's not like it really matters if in 5 years we're all back here pounding our chests as to whether we were right or wrong.

This is a refreshing stance, much better than five years ago when people were nearly run off the boards after watching prohms first year and giving honest assessments.

I support TJ and I have a whole lot more optimism for 2021-22 than I would have otherwise.

I don’t know why any Cyclone fan wouldn’t cheer for and support TJ?

Now.... was it a good hire? That’s debatable. I don’t think it was. But I want nothing more than success for TJ.

Of course everyone will support him. But that doesn’t mean you have to like the hiring process or that he was one of your top choices.

Ok, let’s talk about the facts then. The facts are that there isn’t a single P6 school that would have hired TJ right now as their head coach, except for Iowa State. The facts are that every opening this year took more time and searched more for their next head coach and didn’t wire it to a single candidate. Doesn’t mean TJ won’t win here and I’ll be cheering like hell hoping he does.

The facts are that many people on here can not like how the process went down but have the intellectual ability to support TJ even if he wasn’t in their Top 10 of new coaches.

You call that “whine and gossip”?? These hyperboles from people get really old.

:jimlad:I personally wanted a search firm hired, the University President involved and all the bells and whistles used just like in our previous hire.

Kansas can afford to pay over $7m, and we can’t even break $3m+ for a big name.
You do understand that Kansas pulls in $12M more revenue than Iowa State...every year? Iowa State is basically at the bottom of the Big 12, revenue-wise, yet out performs many of it's fellow conference mates that spends 10's of millions more every year. Right now the route is to financially support the football team, which basically pulls in the vast majority of revenue. Was the hire lazy? Absolutely. Will it work...stay tuned.

You have to teach your guys to screen. You have to teach them to run the floor. You have to teach your big men to put their ass in the right place to get easy buckets. We could’ve done better imo

after watching a bunch of games in the NCAA tournament, it is blatantly obvious of how poorly coached we were. We are seeing experience, defense, rebounding, and teamwork beat talent. Our program and team was not built on any of those above.

Apparently some just want it to be a cult where we just blindly support all things without question because of cardinal and gold.

Did You Know: Otz will hire a few more assistant coaches these next few weeks, sign a few more commits over the next few months, and a new-look Cyclone team will start playing some basketball in Hilton this November. And no amount of Grumpy Gus’s on the Internet will stop this.

If you are mad, your feelings are valid and life goes on. Time to move onto the next stage in the grief process, lest you never reach the “acceptance” stage and enjoy a few Ws in Hilton with the rest of us. And no Clone Cones for you.
