Let me start by saying I support TJ and am definitely not one of his “haters”. But I will say over the last few weeks it’s been beyond negative on here about TJ. I think some of us just need to shut our traps and give him a chance at this opportunity. People here are expecting him to fail before he even starts. It’s just sad to see all the non support of our brand new head coach. It’s sickening.

Starting A poll. I want to see if literally the majority of this board doesn’t support him, or if there is just a hand full of LOUD angry elf’s.

The results of your poll show you might want to amend the title.

Why is this so hard for people to understand? Yes, we will support TJ once the season starts, the same way we supported Prohm, Hoiberg, McDermott, Morgan, etc. Or do you guys think that those of us unhappy with the hire will cheer against the coach (and against ISU)? That is beyond dumb. Blindly supporting the hire right away does not make you a "better fan".

However, it still does not change the fact that the "hiring process" was an absolute sham. If you think that the process had been going on for weeks/months and many candidates were contacted, well then JP could sell you some oceanfront property in Ames. The fact is that most schools try to hire proven winners, young up-and-comers, or seasoned veteran coaches. TJ is none of those. Look, the reality is we're hiring a coach who has been mediocre at best in worse conferences than the B12. And we expect him to make the jump to greatness in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

I hope to God he does well, because that would mean that ISU would be doing well. But I see all the mid-major coaches making the tourney, young coaches, coaches who went from big conferences to smaller ones who may want another crack at the big leagues and I think to myself: None of those coaches would want to coach in the Big12? ALL of these guys and their agents really turned down the ISU job? Are all these guys making $3-5 million a year, so we could not afford them? Again, really doubt it.

This was a lazy, cheap hire by JP to go back to his friend/guy he always wanted as head coach/friend of the program. Since we'll likely never know who interviewed and who didn't, they can say whatever they want about how extensive the process was and we'll just have to take their word for it. But if you tell me the "best candidate" was a guy with mediocre results at mid majors, don't expect me to be excited and jumping out of my seat for that.

And one more thing, being an alumni/from Iowa/or loving the program is never a pre-requisite for a head coach. Some of the best coaches are not alumni of the universities they coach. That type of connection is really overrated.

Anyway, flame away.

I agree re: the hiring process and I've posted similar sentiments. It's like hiring family members, you can't be objective. The only silver lining I see is he may be able to bring talented players to ISU more consistently than Prohm. As poor as Prohm's coaching was, he did have some success when we had more talent on the team, although the type of offense he ran needs players who can create their own shots in iso. situations. But look at Loyola to see how good coaching can elevate a team's play. From purely a talent/athletic view, is their team that much better than ISU's players? In crunch time, I'll take good coaching over athleticism any day.

agreed

having great athletes on the team will also overcome the bad coaching, but not on a consistent basis.

give me good coaching 100% of the time.

TJ's a midwesterner. He can recruit. He loves the school. He is very much a known quantity - won't find him showing up at a frat party after a game. He covets the gig. His wife says he viciously HATES losing. What's not to like? Ya want a big name who'd get things headed in the right direction in 3 years and then move on? I think there's a good chance TJ'll build something special here. I can only imagine how excited he and his family must be at this opportunity. He's starting at absolute rock bottom, and with the transfer situation these days, he may even be able slap a reasonable product together next season. Gonna be fun to watch, and I'll be pulling for him and his team. Hilton will rock again.

And I like the way Pollard handled it - had his hire all lined up before the firing. A real pro.

So how exactly does "refusing to accept him as our coach" look?

"Hey Clonefan32, it has slipped my mind who the current coach of Iowa State is, can you help me out?"

"The current coach is Porter Moser."

"That's weird because I just looked it up on Wikipedia and it says TJ Otzelberger"

"Nope, it's totally Porter Moser."

Me too. Was gonna vote "Maybe" or "Wait & See," but they weren't options. Lol!
I think we should keep him!

God I hate this PC world we are living in. I was hoping that Pollard would actually have a real coaching search, knowing if he could not get his guy, then TJ would always be there as a fallback. But when we hire him within 24 hours of parting ways with Prohm, says it all.

TJ was always the guy, OK, so now he is the coach at ISU, the floor is very low, he wanted this opportunity 6 years ago, and Pollard wanted to give it to him then. I will support him because I love ISU, but I was also one that wanted to give Prohm this season, and look how that turned out.

We better win, or this could come back to bite Jami in the rear-end.

Yeah it was definitely super P.C. and the floor is so low.

Sweet Sixteens and landing big recruits is such a woke move.
