Rumors around Cedar Rapids is that Grant Gibbs (Linn-Mar alum) is in line for a position on TJ's staff. Interesting if so and not saying this is true, just heard it a couple of different times in the area.

Would seem to be a lateral move, as Charlie Henry was head coach of the Bulls G-League team and now he's an assistant with Nate Oats at Alabama.

Regarding GLeague Salaries sounds like not much...

Still, one has to wonder how much money there is in D-League coaching. Despite having more notoriety on the minor league level as a head coach, it'd be sensible to think a staffer could make more money as a video coordinator or even in player development on the big league level.

Assuming as much, one would probably be right. A source tells RidiculousUpside.com that no current head coach in the D-League's salary hits six figures. That said, another source suggests that Coach Hetzel was the minor league's highest paid coach this past season. What's more, his contract featured a commitment of an unprecedented three years. Most D-League coaches' contracts span just one season, due to flexibility purposes for both sides. That said, like Hetzel's, most contracts would be expected to have some sort of leniency towards an NBA clause anyway.

Taking part in D-League competition has never been about the money. Players want to exposure, experience, and develop, all the while remaining as close to home as possible. These are the evident benefits, and they undoubtedly apply to coaches as well.

Playing (or coaching, in this case) in the D-League is simply par for the course. It's a seemingly rather smart move, too. The financial sacrifice one chooses to make for a sole year or two could go on to benefit them immensely in the near future, so that's undoubtedly what most people around the minor league appear to keep in mind along the way.

Would be interesting if it happened. Remember, McDermott brought on Nick Nurse right before he left.

I'm all for keeping Robinson from a recruiting perspective, but to say he's "one of the best on-court and developmental coaches" seems like a reach. Where was that the last couple years?

I hope he is successful because I want to see ISU succeed again too but...

eh, press releases are always full of fluff.

I also think Iowa State's inability to retain players over the past few years hurt the developing side. When players leave to the NBA or transfer you can't really see what they become in the coming years. On top of that when your roster has constant turnover, you may be forced to focus on recruiting/scouting prospects when you much rather be developing and scouting your own team.

He did a pretty good job with Young's post game. And I know he was credited with helping develop Brackins and Justin Hamilton when they were here. Even if you are a good developmental coach, you still have to have players willing to put in the work and also have good enough talent that it makes a difference in the Big 12.

Really outstanding local assistant may be coming to TJ's staff. Kyle Green who by all accounts is both great recruiter and coaches big men at UNI. I know people will wonder if A.J. will follow him, but I think this would be an great addition to our staff regardless of AJ. Great basketball mind who would fit in well in Ames. Time will tell if this is TJ's choice, but I will be excited if he is one of the new coaches.

Kyle Green
