I’ve always wondered why Iowa seems to be so fortunate re the number of tornado deaths. Are ours typically not as strong as the southern ones? P-burg resulted in 9 deaths and I don’t think that’s been exceeded since and that’s going on 13 years now.

Iowa doesn’t really get that many strong tornadoes on a yearly basis, lots of barren land, basements/tornado shelters, not as many trailer parks as Alabama, MS, or Oklahoma.

I am from Parkersburg area and it is a damn miracle more people didn't die in that thing.

I think it was the Tuesday after that Sunday it hit when I took some donated items from our church. I thought the exact same thing. I also remember thinking “This town is done for”. Not sure how they did it, but the people involved should give speeches about how to recover from something like that.

Not sorry that tornado alley moving south, but very few basements south of Missouri. That’s going to be tough down there, better start building storm cellars.

I think the trajectory in OK and AL is for custom tornado shelters inside of homes. James Spann mentioned when his house got hit that his wife was in their shelter when the tornado hit. They kind of look like little backyard sheds (but obviously made of stronger materials).

OK might even have a rule that new builds need to include them in areas that don’t have easily accessible neighborhood shelters.

Where they love the governor
So glad that we went to the beach this week! It looks like we lucked out... Still have power at the house (my security cameras are still working). Hopefully I'm not missing shingles or anything.

And yes, Spann is the man down here. We actually have polygon-based warnings and sirens down here, so if you hear one going off, it's coming for you.

Spann has one because he's covered large tornadoes in his youth. It's definitely not standard to have them built in.

I'd like to have one, but don't have a good spot to put one. There's an outfit that will put one under your garage that can double as an oil change pit. Once I get back to full time, might have to get one put in.

Do new build subdivisions down there have neighborhood shelters built in to them? I noticed in the coverage that Eagle Point got hit and they had a community pool and clubhouse.
