Beard to Texas makes a lot of sense since he cut his teeth under Penders at Texas. But Beard has a distinct style that could turn some elite players off. Texas is a BIG job both on and off the court.

If I were Texas I would go big and see if there is interest.
  • Beard
  • Self - that would get Jayhawk fans going!!!

UT just does not strike me as a conducive environment for successful coaching. I'm not sure what it is, but in both sports talent has not equated to wins for some time. I guess the question just becomes whether you think some of these guys are good coaches who are hamstrung by the University, or just bad coaches who don't maximize talent.
When you have all the money in the world, it’s easy just to throw it at the hot name instead of the right fit. Also, the reason UT has all of that money, the massive donor base, is why the coaches struggle so much. They don’t get to install their own culture and have to try to fit to the whatever the demands of the donors are.

I agree with this, though I think Beard would also be a good fit at UT. If he keeps winning that eases some of the extra stuff.

Don't think Sark is a good fit otoh

I hope Beard heads to UT so TT can go back to the cellar where they belong. Texas is always going to be a solid/good program purely on talent they can recruit...

Tech isn't.

I agree about Tech but with them willing to compensate Beard so nicely, they may be able to attract another big name. $4.5 mil will get almost anyones attention.

This kind of reminds me of the Campbell rumors to some extent. Beard is at a place where he fits well, has installed his own culture and had success, and the school is committed to making sure he's happy. Can stay there as long as he pleases. But you worry that some point he's going to get an offer he can't refuse. Does Beard view the UT job as that offer, being an alum?

Not sure why people think that TT is going "back to the cellar" if Beard leaves. TT pays a big salay and they can get big names there (i.e. Bobby Knight and Tubby Smith). They can also get good coaches there...like Chris Beard. They have a solid "modern" MBB history, dating back to Gerald Myers in the early 1970s. They only have two less NCAA tourney appearances than ISU does. Not to mention a great recruiting footprint.

If Beard does leave, I'd be so bold as to suggest that there would be as much or more interest in the TT job than there was in ISU's job.

Folks said the same about BU football after Briles left, and Rhule had them back to winning in short order. TT MB would likely be no different if they hire the right guy (like is the case for any other program hiring a new coach).

I've seen TT have Bobby Knight, Tubby Smith, and Chris Beard leading the way. I've also seen them with James Dickey and Billy Gillispie.

Tech is a good job for the reasons you listed above, but kind of like ISU in that a bad hire can send them to the lower half of the B12 quickly.

I didn’t mean they’d forever suck, even though it looks like that’s what I meant lol I meant that they’d most likely be starting from scratch, which at this point is a huge plus for ISU.

That has been the rumor since the first year Beard had success at TT. I don't think it is a coincidence that TT has a 4 mil buyout for any Big 12 school but 2 mil for all others. Now will UT pay it since they are paying Tom Herman and his staff right now. I guess that was a major reason that Shaka keep it this year (and why he jumped to Marq)

The post I was replying to said ...

Like TT is some kind of cellar-dweller that just popped out because of Chris Beard. That isn't the case.

Good point, we shouldn't assume Beard leaving will end with them in the cellar. Look at TCU hiring Dixon, that was suppose to vault them into contender status and hasn't worked out.
The difference in my mind is Tubby and Knight won with style but weren't recruiting 5 star McD AA types Beard was. Also Beard was very successful with the Transfer Portal. TT isn't a bad job but Beard is one of a handful of coaches who get that program to the NC game.

They were talking about Beard the other day on the college sports channel of Sat. radio. They said that Beards buyout increases if he goes to UT, they didn't say what it was. But it will cost UT more to buy him out than any other school in the country.

No one surprised when Huggins left K-State for his alma mater. I wouldn't be if Beard did the same to his at Texas.

Of course, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt saw this possibility coming as well. As part of the 6-year, $27.4 million contract extension Beard received after the 2019 season, a stipulation was put in place that Beard’s buyout would be doubled from $3 million to $6 million should he leave for any school in the Big 12 or the state of Texas. fansided

Beard to Texas would tell us a lot about if the culture there is as tough to break as football.

Beard had to have agreed to that condition, meaning that this exact situation was certainly discussed.
