I haven't thoroughly reviewed all 13 pages here, but does anyone have any hard evidence to prove this offer Dodd mentions was in fact an offer to Matt Campbell, and not Dan Campbell who the Lions actually hired?

Nonetheless, Detroit offering anyone >$8M/year as a first time NFL head coach is a bit silly. That'd put the coach in the top 10 of all NFL head coach salaries.

Which would be the answer you got, from two different people.

What you seem to be rather obtusely avoiding is the simple fact that that isn’t his only goal.
FFS, you're completely missing my point and I wasn't talking to you or anyone else that has replied so far.

Excellent points. I wonder if he'd go with an "entitled" fan base with ridiculous standards. Combining ridiculous standards and entitlement might give someone pause.

I think the quality of the Athletic Department would have to be a consideration.

I don't know how well run the Notre Dame AD is. They print money, but I have no clue how they are to work with. Kelly has been there for an impressively long time with high highs and some just ok season with what they have to work with.
I know USC has had a lot of issues with ADs and hiring quality people in the past. The USC name still has some cache but they were sullied a bit when Pete Carrol left and the Reggie Bush fiasco. Oregon had outclassed USC pretty consistently until a few years ago when Chip Kelly left and Helfrich plummeted after early success. I think Cristobal has them going the right direction, especially raw talent.

What reason does Dodd have to lie about it? Hurts his credibility and it's not like he has any skin in the game.

I always used to reason that coaches like Fred or Campbell could make more at ISU in the long run because they've got essentially lifetime employment as opposed to going to some dysfunctional pro franchise and getting fired after three years...

...but if what is being reported is true, this is a whole other level.

Fred did not leave for the money, he left to be tested by what he saw as the best of the best.

He also played in the NBA and worked in an NBA front office. Two big connections.

If Campbell had played in the NFL and been an NFL assistant before being a head coach in college there would be a LOT more smoke about him having an NFL destination job.

“FFS”, it’s a message board. If you’re only addressing a certain person and want to be pedantic, DM them.

I’m not missing your point. I’ve been agreeing with it from the start. It’s a given, a moot point.

Hah, well, my comment was mostly tongue-and-cheek, but same as all recruiting intel: it's not a lie if you're simply misinformed.

Gotcha, and certainly a possible answer. No idea if they Lions would ever confirm either as it makes them look like they didn't get their "first choice" for the job.
