They aren't exactly underclassmen anymore but the offense really needs Shaw and Scates to take their game up a notch and give Purdy some deep threats. As for underclassmen Easton Dean seems like a good bet as need someone to fill that 3rd TE spot that Soehner did so well at. Daniel Jackson would be a nice surprise too if he can carve out a role.

With so many guys that returned there aren't going to be many positions up for grabs so the young guys will need to be hungry and impress when they get their opportunities.

Scates has loads of talent, but I think it is between the ears with him. He struggled to know where to line up last year which caused a few ineligible man downfield penalties.

I would just like to see him be a regular game day contributor first. Hard to think about him going pro yet.

He's going to have to have a monster season to be thinking about the NFL. From what we have seen of him so far he really needs to work on his routes and hands and show us some consistency. If he was that close to going pro he would have carved out a bigger role by now than just 8 catches in 2 seasons. Just look at how hard it has been for some of our best receivers over the years to make the NFL, Butler still has not caught a ball and Lazzard had to work his tail off just to get to where he is at now plus have a little luck on his side with Rodgers basically telling the Packers coaching staff to play him.

I just watched the premium townhall with Greg Brabenec - Scates was mentioned as the fastest player on the team, which really surprised me. I figured Jaylen Nole, TJ Tampa, etc might be the name mentioned. Also there's a good discussion about how off the field stuff keeps players off the field. I can't help but feel that Scates lack of playing time is related to anything except talent - could be off the field, or attention to detail stuff, but from everything we're hearing talent isn't the issue.

I wonder if Scates just has the talent, and looks great in practice… but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened in games yet? Whether it’s just how the flow of the game is going/play calling. Or when he does get the ball thrown at jik
It’s bad luck as in maybe a bad pass or great coverage?

Hard to say, it wouldn’t shock me at all if he’s a late bloomer. But we are pretty stacked especially after figuring in TE’s and RB.

I've thought the same...but had to remind a buddy of mine there are only so many offensive snaps...so literally impossible for all of our weapons to have gawdy stats.

As it seems we really are settled in to the "safe" style of runs, short TE throws, possession Hutch catches, might just be not as many opportunities for him to shine.

I also am reminded we likely will be very vanilla the first game....and i don't know if I want Purdy to be slinging it too deep unless it's absolutely there.

Back to topic, I hope we see JR Singleton emerge as another fresh D line that comes in often and disrupts the other team and also could see Jihrel Brock also in a few packages or for a series or two make it hard to not get him the ball.

Oh we’re going to be VERY vanilla offensively. Now that we know who we are and what style we want to play, we’re going to run the ball with Breece and Jirehl, and then play possession ball with X, Shaw, and our TE’s. UNI will not be able to stop that with the talent there and on our offensive line.

For sure....which i am ok with! I know there will be spurts...a RB will break loose, Milton gets one in the slot and moves it, etc.

Would be a mistake but would wish him well.
Just curious. How do you call it a mistake, without even seeing what he does, or what happens?

If he puts up 60 catches for 1,200 yards and ten TD’s against this level of competition and goes in the first round, I have a hard time calling that a “mistake”.

Especially if he may or may not have a family to support, and has—or is close to—his degree.

Well, we knew who we were last year. With all of the injuries at WR, and playing green guys. Who we are this year may prove to be different.

That’s pretty much what CMC has been saying. Find the way to maximize the talent that you have. In the past, the WR talent hasn’t been necessarily been there as it is beginning to emerge as now.

True! Very true. If we can go 100 miles an hour and have explosive plays left and right, while also be able to take a team 90 yards on 13 plays for a score, we’re going to be very very hard to stop.

Hakeem Butler put up 60 receptions for 1318 yards and 9 touchdowns his last season at Iowa State. Listen, I am all for the Scates hype put he isnt putting up those kinds of numbers. Not even close!

He just needs to be a guy that can make defenses freaking pay if you crowd the LOS on Hall and try to take away Kolar and Hutchinson.

being very vanilla against UNI has bit us in the @ss more than once. We would like to believe that we could just line up and run over UNI, but the fact is we have never been able to do that. We have had to pull a rabbit out of the hat to win.

Sean Foster at LT. Ramos was on the sideline. SO I'm guessing Remsburg took over at RT. WR's were Hutch, Milton and Wilson Jr.

I'm guessing they are just subbing guys in. Settle was likely the backup to Eni

If he goes in the 1st rd. it's not a mistake. Maybe I misread or read too fast.

I don't think he has a chance in hell to be a 1st rounder after what we've seen. Going from what he's been to a top 5-8 WR, in the nation, would floor me. Even a great 1-year sample would be tough to draft that high from. Would be cool to get a 1st rounder, after 4 decades, from a guy who has done next to nothing.

I remember he had that play where he was at first down marker yardage, then ran backwards behind the line to gain.

Plays like that will have coaches steaming through their ears.

Yes. BUT, our offense instilled now is built to be vanilla. We truly didn’t do anything that special offensively against Texas, KSU, WV, or Oregon and we won each game and the last three pretty darn easily.

We are a COMPLETELY different football team now. In 2019 we barely had a run game to start the year and our OL was average to below average. All American running back and a top 10 OL changes things.

Our “vanilla” won’t be Brock dropping back and slinging it around to his WR’s 35+ times. Our vanilla will be lining up in our base sets and running it down your f’n throat and the only way you stop that is by overcompensating, which we’ll then hit our All American TE or good receiving core where you aren’t and you’re screwed.

I can never tell due to TV angles but deep shots look like they've been there often but are underthrown for picks.
