Assuming the Big XII implodes, losing the Big XII tournament in KC will be a tragedy

Yeah that’s the problem. Of course there is a lot of fun things fairly close. But the whole point of these things is that you don’t need to drive around.

I agree.

What people were saying was "Chicago should never host any NCAA events".

That's utter nonsense. Chicago is perfectly fine as an NCAA tournament site. Maybe it's not ideal as KC or Indy, but it's not the gates of hell to play at the UC.

I went there for the Duke game when we played a one off when McD was the coach and I went there for the Sweet 16 game as well. I agree the part of town is fine. It's not great but I didn't feel unsafe over there or anything.

I was so excited for that game with great tickets just a few rows up...knew we had talent on the team...and that game was when I realized regardless of talent it was just not going to work with McD.

The immediate area around the UC is more just empty and stagnant, but the area between downtown to the east and the area between WickerPark/Bucktown/UK Village to the north have gentrified rapidly.

In '02 to '10 range I wouldn't have walked or biked those stretches. When I moved away in '16 I would bike or walk those areas on occasion but not late at night by myself.

The bottom line is this would be a WONDERFUL problem for ISU basketball to have because it means we'd be in the Big Ten. It's a non factor.

It was desolate around the UC - when I lived in Chicago in the late 90s-early 00s! Didn't stop me from going to B1G Tourney, NCAA and Great 8 games though! However, when I went to the Sweet 16 vs Virginia in 2016, I was pleasantly surprised at the gentrification (Bar, Restaurant, Condo, Bar, Restaurant, Apts., etc.) on Madison walking back to the Loop.

Well to be honest if the Big 12 continued my guess they would move it to Dallas before long anyway. I thought that was the original plan anyway. Have to continue to keep TX happy in any way possible.
They tried to move it to Dallas in the early days of the Big Xii, but it flopped and returned to KC as fast as they could!

Don't care the Horns are gone and no reason to kiss their ass any more. You don't think planes fly into Kansas City?

If there is one thing execs love it is layovers in Chicago and Denver so they can fly to Kansas City because the Horns are gone so we said this will stick it to them.

Yeah, by the time I moved in 2015 I was regularly walking or riding my bike down toward that direction from Wicker Park/Bucktown/Ukrainian Village areas that are very desirable and not too far north. Maybe gentrifying even faster toward east/downtown like you mention. Really the entire city just to the NW and W of downtown has improved in an amazing way. The Chicago river went from literally toxic to now people take canoes on it and want to locate businesses and homes near it. Back in 2002 when I first arrived I probably wouldn't have walked or biked in a lot of those areas, especially not at night.

My good friends lived walking distance from Cabrini Green (projects Goodtimes was set in for those who don't know it) and one even bought a home in the mixed income dwellings they built to replace them...that's probably the most extreme gentrification possible in the United States, the area around Cabrini Green is really primo real estate now.

I have a lot of nostalgia for the city even though I don't miss the weather. The city and state government truly are corrupt (beyond typical party stuff), but it somehow is thriving and growing in spite of it.

The new B12 with BYU, Cincy and UH might even be better in bball. The tourney should continue in KC. That's at least some positive news.

Don’t forget Memphis.

In football, it would easily be the most competitive football conference. Easily. Kansas is the only weak link. The problem is there’s no OSU, Alabama, Clemson, or Oklahoma going 12-0/11-1/10-2 on a regular basis(well Iowa State could if CMC stays). The Big12 will get knocked because it has a bunch of good schools facing each other. Which will also happen in the SEC, but they have it easy because the bottom half of the SEC is much easier than the bottom half of this expanded Big12 would be.

In all honesty I don't know why we keep catering to Texas other than their $ base. I posted some of this in another thread but if you go back and look over their FB and BB records over the past decade or so they have been very mediocre. Since Mac Brown was forced out after 2013 they are now on their 3rd FB coach and went 48-39 and not even making a bowl game 2 of those year. Take out a 10 win season they had in 2018 and they haven't won 10 or more games since 2009. Basketball has been a mess too. They last time they finished ranked in the top 25 was in 2010-11 and have not been to the Sweet 16 since 2008. Yet this is a school that still thinks they are a blueblood program and have bullied their way into getting favorable deals over the years.

10 years ago, they let Iowa State, and 7 other teams live.

if it’s as hopeless as all of these people are saying, and we have no options other than taking a 20 million dollar tv pay cut, imagine where we’d have been 10 years ago.

I have a lot of ut alum and fan friends They’re delusional. But Iowa State wouldn’t have any of the nice things they’ve had, if ut didn’t decide to let espn stay in the game with a network.
