Seems like one of those “someone started this narrative and the pump up machine did it’s job”…but what is the basis for it?

They were top ten rush defense and top 30 total defense last season.

Much better than most years.

Really seemed to have their ears pinned the last half of the season. I remember watching vs. Baylor and thinking they looked like OU used to look instead of basically being a poorly coached paper towel.

Made a splash DC hire a couple of years ago and late last season looked like it was starting to come together for them. That was probably the missing piece as they always recruit well.

1.) There was a big improvement in the OU defensive stats for the last 7 games last year. The assumption is it will carry forward for the whole year.

2.) With the OU offense the defense only has to be is better than average, which people think they will be much better than average in 2021.

3.) OU is coming soon to the SEC so the defense will automatically get better.

They decided it was not wise to have so many undersized DBs.

It was weird how bad Mike Stoops was.

I remember the Rose Bowl vs. GA and it pointed out they had players legit lined up incorrectly several times in the 2nd half.

I was bummed when I learned the new DC is a Mount Union guy. The last thing we want is OU with a strong culture.

Even with the opt outs at TE and WR, I think a lot of it comes from OU completely dominating Florida's OL and making a Heisman finalist look like it was his first start.

There is a short and long answer to the question... My reasonably short explanation is as follows

1) The Big 12 has been migrating to a better defensive league for a couple years now.. OU is the most talented team in the league.. Ergo, they get praise for a rising defense
2) New DC scheme is heavy on pressure. OC's in the league haven't had a good off-season to game-plan it
3) Recruiting rankings
4) Blue blood jer*-off obsessing from E$PN.. Made worse with the $EC invite
5) Their d-line was REALLY good once Ronnie Perkins came back
6) Have to create a story-line to get people interested as CFB is boring at the top

I'll stop there but could keep going

Grinch is legit. Made a huge jump last season. Had Manning looking completely lost the entire first half of the CCG last season, and they should only be getting better.

Pretty sure they had at least at top ten defense last year in terms of defensive efficiency, they return some really good players and of course recruit really well.

Perrion Winfrey absolutely wrecked our interior o-line in Dallas, last December.. He returns

Bonitto is pretty good. He got to rush 1v1 due to the Perkins double teams in 2020. Without Perkins on the opposite side.. We'll see if he is as effective
