I think that JP already has his man, or is very close to it, and he may have let the Stoops idea leak to a) throw the media off and b) make the new hire seem like a good hire.

JP has been know to use such tactics to his advantage before (not saying he arranges it). Think for a minute. No one is a big fan of Mike Stoops and JP will be looking for someone who can not only coach, but also create some buzz.

Stoops doesn't fit that, but there are a number of coaches being considered that do. Gill was a fan favorite but was quickly eliminated. Anything immediately following Gill's announcement would have been viewed as settling, but now that we have flirted with hiring Stoops, there are a number of names I can think of that would be viewed as a step up.

yeah, I think that's the case as well. It's almost a mirror image of two years ago. "It's this guy", "no, it's that guy", "this source says...", "but that source said..." and when everyone thought they had it figured out - bam - we got blindsided. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the case again. JP's becoming the master of disguise.

What's the point of this approach? At this point, ISU doesn't need buzz, just needs a good coach.

I think the main buzz yesterday came from a certain radio station that is trying hard to get the scoop, but is on the outside looking in. I'm not sure that I am expecting a huge splash hire like the last one appeared to be, but I'm pretty sure I'll be hapy with it.

I don't think Pollard has the time or the inclination to start "leaks" or rumors. He has his hands full looking for a coach and keeping it on the DL.

I think that is done solely by people trying to get a scoop, and jumping from point A to point Z.

That being said, I don't think it's going to be Stoops, and I have no idea who it's going to be.

IF it's something concocted by Jamie, it's pretty low to Stoops.

I think people read way too much into searches like this.

What would be the point of creating a diversion?

All he has to do is keep his mouth shut and the rest will fall into place.

Exactly. The names come from people trying to out-scoop the competition, but if you want to believe it's part of Jamie's master plan, that's cool too.

It would serve no purpose for ISU to fabricate candidates.

Something to keep in mind is that we're hearing this from Marty Tirrell, whose source is a big donor. It could be the big donor just messing with Marty to throw him off. It doesn't really have to do with Pollard

I don't think Jamie leaked anything. He is just sitting back and letting the speculation run wild... Somebody gets an idea such as...

1) Fulmer says in passing to somebody that the ISU job wouldn't be that bad
which turns to
2) Fulmers says he's interested in the job
which turns to
3) Fulmer's people are reaching out to ISU
which turns to
4) The negotiations are almost done

Silence is golden for JP

Pollard said we wouldn't hear from him again until he was ready to introduce the new coach. Why is that so hard to understand? Nothing about the "search" has been released from the ISU athletic dept. Fullmer, Stoops, Patterson ????? all rumors. Talking heads and internet nerds are all trying to be first, and end up looking like fools.

IMO:

Stoops was a plan by hawkeye faithful to bring his name up for a couple of reasons:

  1. Easy show prep, spread rumors.
  2. Increase radio listeners.
  3. Create a stir on the Interwebs from said radio.
  4. Create a need for Stoops to be paid more (a hawk looking out for a hawk) by radio.

It cannot be Stoops.

Considering the importance of this hire and the fact Greg is struggling with basketball...

Jamie cannot put the most important sport in the athletic dept in Stoops hands... he hasn't proved deserving of this shot.

I bet Jamie is just relaxing at home working his list on JobDig...laughing at us.

I could see a coach allowing his name to be used in such a way, if it got them a raise from their current school.

However this stuff happens, speculation=attention. Attention can grow into interest, which can grow into ticket sales. Somewhere along the way, ticket sales = $. Good formula if you can make it work.

Totally agree. Stoops is not a very well liked coach with his own fanbase. A guy like that who has been on the hotseat for the last couple of years with only 2 years left on his contract could really use this as a bargaining chip with his current school. If another school is trying or allegedly trying to get him after his one and only good season it may create a rallying cry by the fanbase and administration to keep him. We all know the power that the fanbase has when it comes to their coach. ISU fans strongly voiced their opinion on McCarney and look at the results....Gone.

I, in no way think that JP spent much time orchestrating a leak, but it wouldn't take much. There are allot of people blaming this completely on Marty, but other sports media have said that they were getting sources saying the same thing. I'm not a Marty apologist, but I do believe he was a victim here.

I'm not even convinced that JP is leaking information, but I think he may be using misinformation to his advantage. The only reason I suspect a leak is because this has happened in every coaching search he has done. Just as we think we know who the new coach is, he surprises us with someone else.

of course we need a good coach - that's a no-brainer but the buzz doesn't hurt either to fuel some fan (and hopefully player/recruit) excitement. Some of the names being mentioned so far would split the fan base based on responses I've seen.
