KTAR in AZ report contract terms with Stoops

I wanna win now, and I want us to hire the best coach out there...but to pin the success or lack of success for next year's team on whoever we hire doesn't make much sense.

Making sense or not really isn't the issue. Fans are nearly tapped out. With the economy being tough, FB is one of the first things to go. Sell hope and it won't go so quickly. Fair...unfair - that's just the way it is.

ISU FB is at a very important crossroads. We've got a lot riding on the facility upgrades and need the cash to pay for 'em. Gotta get a coach that excites people and then ultimately - one that can win.

Plus, I firmly believe we have the talent to win. We were spanking KU in the first half this year, only to look like a bunch of morons in the 2nd half of that game.

Chizik did recruit pretty well - so as long as we don't have major defections - the talent is better today than it was '06.

Let me ask this...which coach out there has the best chance to win with players that are not up to par with the rest of the conference? I don't think anyone can rationally say Stoops is even in the top 5 on that front.

I'm not seeing that in the article. The only Tucson source I see there is the Tucson Citizen (presumably a newspaper), and Stoops told them "no comment."

Here's another article with a lot more information. Arizona's AD hasn't even heard from Pollard. It also mentions "radio reports in Iowa." There's no way that could be anything other than KXNO, and we already know they're wrong (by Marty's own admission today).

Stoops: 'No comment' on Iowa State

I heard the entire discussion on the radio. Their source is not a DM radio station. They have contacts down in Tucson. I don't know what the blurb on their website is just talking about when they say the story was broken by the station in DM. Maybe just that there was interest in Stoops. The Phoenix radio guys heard from their U of A sources that JP asked Livengood for permission to speak to Stoops.

I still don't believe it. The only source that any of these Arizona media outlets have cited is "Iowa radio station" reports, and that's got to be KXNO unless we all missed something. We all know what's been said on KXNO, so why is it all of a sudden a big deal if the AZ media are just regurgitating something they heard from a source which, in reality, doesn't seem to know what the hell is going on?

For the upteenth time. That's not true. Their sources are from Tucson.

Took over a downtrodden AU program and back in their first bowl in 10 years. Mentioned elsewhere only 18 points away from being 10-1. Took USC to the wire and a few other close ones. His recruiting classes make ours look even sillier. HC experience and training on someone else's dime...

Agree. Mackovic left a mess down there, and Stoops righted the ship. He sure wouldn't be scared of our mess here, and would dive right in.
The Wildcats looked really good this year. Those skeptical of Stoops must have missed his game vs. USC.

Could have gone 9-3 if not for last second losses to Stanford and Oregon State. The difference between winning and losing those two games is the difference between a Las Vegas Bowl and a Rose Bowl. He was only a combined 3 points shy in those losses. He took USC to the wire but came up short, heck he didn't lose a game by more than 10 points all season. He's proven that he can coach up a competitive team and I'll take that in a heartbeat over the crap I've seen the last 3 years. That's the small difference between your "yawn" and a "WOW".

So, can I now start saying that Iowa would have played for the national title if Banks and Russell hadn't gotten hurt in the ISU game in 2002, and Iowa should be 12-0 this year and playing for the title?

;)

It wouldn't be the first time I'd heard that from a Hawk fan.

Looking back at that now, we we're outcoached by miles in that 2nd half.

Chuck Long has the 1.4 million dollar 'you can't coach next year' buyout from SDST, but he is working to negotiate that, because he doesn't want to be out of coaching.

There you go. Way to look at the bright side. Then they could have been murdered in the Fiesta Bowl instead of the Orange Bowl.

You don't average 462 yards and 25 first downs per game in 75% of your conference games and not have talent on the offense.

The defense, that is another story.

Right on Jon. Oh and ISU should have been in the Big 12 title game in 04 and 05. Good teams close out those games.

Perfect example - as that type of spin won't fly...but Stoops spin will?

Meh...

I think they would have beaten Ohio State or Miami. USC was the best team in the nation, IMO.

BUT...it was said in jest.

That's one way to look at that game...another way would be to say that KU looked like a bunch or morons until they woke up at halftime.
Our talent is not up to par. We need a drawing card as coach to compete for the top midwest players, and the top Iowa players who all seem to go to IC. Stoops has that personality and background. The OU defense is still good, but not as good as when Mike Stoops was DC...

There's a coach in Texas coaching a non-BCS team that seems to have good defenses. Now...I can't quite place the name. Can anyone help me?

Regardless, we'd need a real magician there or someone that can bring immediate help on the defensive line.

I believe we have the offense to win, and a defense with holes all over it...I've been a Cyclone fan my whole life, and I'm not gonna pin my judgment on the next Cyclone football coach on how he does in his first season with Chizik and Mac's players, whether it's Stoops or whoever...and if people do decide to do that, it's their decision..but i'd very much question their sports iq and understanding of college athletics.

I'm not saying that, but I'm saying that it takes a heck of a coach to put a team in that position, whether they come through or not isn't always up to the coach. A coach can't decide whether a kicker makes a 40 yarder to win a game or if the star player gets hurt. There's good luck and bad luck to go around for everyone. I'm just pointing out that you'd have to be a pretty decent coach to have those opportunities and look back on what happened and say "we were this close".
