Good grief, Stoops takes over a bad program and steadily takes it to a couple of winning records and a bowl game, and people say he can't coach. Wasn't Arizona his first head coaching job? Sounds like a pretty good start to me and if he's our new coach he can use his experience at zona and his recruiting contacts throughout the Big 12 and Iowa to build a better program here. I'm truly amazed how anybody can say he's a bad coach. His resume shows he is clearly a good coach and his recruiting connections and midwestern roots make him an ideal candidate for ISU. Sure I'd take Patteron or Gill first, but I will also be very pumped if Stoops is our guy.

Very good post.

Did you SEE that game against USC or just the score? That game wasn't as close as the score...

Yes, and Arizona was very impressive with their defense. If you also watched the whole game, you must have seen USC get bailed out 3 minutes to go, when they fumbled at their own 10, but their tight end picked up the ball and ran it out to the 39. That fluke play was the biggest in the game.
You must have missed the game when Arizona crushed Cal this year. Does Stoops get credit for that?
Arizona had a great season, yet all the cycnics lump all the losses from his rebuilding years and judge him on that. I don't get it.

There is a reason Arizona fans aren't making a stink, they will be happy to see him go. He is not going to be a guy that will excite the fan base and he won't try... The guy has the personality of a thumbtack, he'll either turn his back or ***** ya...

I agree with this. Is Stoops the sexy hire? Absolutely not but there are a lot worse choices out there. I am sure he learned a lot from his first coaching experience. I am willing to support him 100%.

Correction (before somebody jumps on me), Stoops improved zona to a 500 season and winning record). I find it hard to believe that many people think of UCLA, Washington and Arizona when they think of Pac 10 football no matter when they grew up. USC, UCLA and Washinton yes, Arizona no. And was it Bobby or Mike that ran over and knocked down the goal post in his playing days? That's gotta be worth something.

Who were the teams going to bowls in the 90's? I remember the Desert Swarm defense and how they stomped Miami in the Fiesta Bowl...

Improvement out of the football program would excite me a heck of a lot more than fiery pep talks and a nice personality...and Arizona's football program has improved under Stoops.

JP has got some brass. This is a smart hire for JP, albeit an unpopular one.

But I guess that's why they pay him the big bucks...

Color me not so impressed with that particular loss.

Yeah USC is a great team this year, but it's mostly great on Defense, not offense. Arizona still gave up 370 yards of offense and 19 first downs. USC had 10 penalties for nearly 70 yards.

And it's still an "L". We played Oklahoma to within 10 last year. How'd that turn out for us this year?

A few good years or even a decade doesn't make a football power. We beat some highly ranked teams in the 70's and went to a number of bowls in the late 90's and early 00's, but I doubt people think of ISU when they think of good Big 8 or Big 12 programs. I'm not sure what the personality of a thumbtack is but when I've watched Stoops on the sidelines he looks like a very intense and high energy coach to me. I thought that was his reputation.

The difference is that the close OU loss was a fluke. We sucked last year. Arizona does not. The defense, under Mike's brother Mark, finshed #20 in the nation in total defense.

Have you people forgot the last 2 JP coaching searches?!?!

It's far too early to blow the whistle on Coach Dillinger and the soccer program...jk...what does any of Jaime Pollard's previous hires have to do with whether or not Mike Stoops can coach football?

Consistency is the key. We gave up 56 to Texas, but held OU to 17, whereas Stoops was holding teams to under 28 points all season long. Let's see if we held teams under 28 all season we'd be 6-6.

You're right, but I find the numbers amusing. It used to be good defenses held teams to 7 or 10 all season long.

Mike Stoops has been the head coach at one program...when he got to that program they were down...in his first year with just players he recruited, they went 7-5...how anybody can say he is a bad coach is beyond me...this may not be Temple, but it sure as heck isn't Florida, or even Iowa...say what you want about his personality, but the guy has coached for one program, and he has improved that program in his time there.

Aren't we the worst FBS team?

I assume you are being sarcastic since we are in the one of the best conferences in the country and had two wins and lost three other games by a total of 9 points. Washington only had a hope in two games, one of those against WSU, and that was in one of the worst BCS conference. Washington St. was just as miserable in performance, only they had a win over Washington and a bad FCS team. I sure WU and WSU are worse then Kent St, whom we beat by 20, SDSU could possibly beat both of them.
