Gene would have had to talk to the state high school coaches. He was too busy talking to Florida and Texas coaches instead to prepare for his future legacy dowen South. It was planned.
Did we get that "goat" emoticon along with the upgrade?

Iowa has a few others in-staters like King, Kroul, and Brodell, who could play in the Big 12 also.
ISU has had in-state recruits who were all Big 12 players like Todd Blythe, Aaron Brant, Tyson Smith, etc.
The idea that you "can't win" with in-state players because they aren't good enough is a crock. The top Iowa players are just as good as top players anywhere. There aren't enough of them to fill an entire roster, but that doesn't mean you don't get them. It's a lot easier to get someone from Iowa to stay here than it is to get someone from Texas to come here. Just because Chizik never gave a rip about in-state recruiting and focused on the south doesn't mean it was the correct strategy. And it's not like he was going toe-to-toe with Texas and Oklahoma in the south, either, most of the players he brought in were picking ISU over Sun Belt and Conference USA schools.
In my opinion very little of our success will be based on instate recruiting. I feel the same way about basketball. .
Rhoads is recruiting for the basketball program too?ISU would be very succesfull if they could land most of the instate basketball talent. Plenty of instate talent to build a successfull program with.
I question how anyone could objectively state otherwise.
CAN I GET A WITNESS
The state of Iowa just doesn't put out that many quality players. And McCarney strangled his program signing too many of them-
The walkon program was lacking under Chizik to say the least, Rhoads knows how important walkons are as he coached some pretty good ones when he was here before so I have confidence the walkon program will be a strong point again.

Just think how bad we would have sucked if we had signed Raef Lafrentz, Nick Collison, and Kirk Hinrich. I guess you were happy when Adam Haluska transferred away so we could replace him with a better out-of-state player? And it goes without saying we can go out of state and do better than Harrison Barnes, huh?

Great players no doubt, but there is too much gap in years between when these guys played. Fred Hoiberg graduated HS in 1991, Lafrenz in '94, Ricky Davis '97, Hinrich and Collison in '99.
My point is that we don't have a pipeline of good D1 players year after year in football or basketball and you have to go out of state to fill in the gaps. We should be able rattle off the names of 30 or 40 good players, not just five or six over a 10 to 15 year period.
One interesting thing about Chizik's recruiting was the fact they were going after kids in Minn and Wis, I hope that continues. There are 11 million people in those two states and plenty of talent to send our way. Iowa has gotten some kids from there and I think that Bret dbag Bielema is starting to slip though Brewster is heating up. Neither state has a second BCS or other D1 school taking talent, the kids are generally very smart and acclimated to the cold.
One exception-Robinson was recruited by McCarney.
Keep it up, go after Chicago area, Omaha, KC, and STL as well and I do love some of the talent we have on the team from Tex and Fla, keep it up!!!!!!!!!!
