its not just the offensive line.
have they under performed yes. without a doubt. but they have had 8 man, sometimes 9 man boxes (there are 5 of them) and even 7 when you add Allen / Rus and unless Kolar is blocking inside the box there is at worst one free defender. Not to mention there is a shocking level of disrespect shown to Purdy as a ball carrier that we have not taken advantage of enough IMO....
and no huge threat on the perimeter. We have one true game changer and he lines up in the backfield.
Unless you have 3-5 NFL caliber offensive linemen (early round guys not just a bunch of 6th round guys) you are not going to be able to maul people out of the way against consistent 8 man boxes or pass pro when EVERYTHING we do is either super slow developing on the ground , we never move the pocket....
we do absolutely NOTHING to help the offensive line.
1) Screens ? Rarely,
2) Draws? Rarely if ever.
3) Roll outs and boots to move the pocket? Occasionally to rare.
4) Seemingly go on multiple snap counts? Don't know, hard to tell on tv.
5) Have well scripted quick hitting plays? Ha-ha-ha.
6) Get the ball on the perimeter quickly to draw leverage and un-accounted for defenders out of the box? Rarely,
7) Have a quarterback who excels at getting rid of the ball quickly and decisively
8) Have a productive down field passing game to again draw the safeties and leveraged defenders away from the box which also makes line backers not rush down field on the snap like a bat out of hell because they're worried about getting to their drops at 10-12 yards or more depending on the coverage call.
9) Run to where the defense is not
Like I get it. The offensive line has been less than stellar... but how many of those 8 or 9 things to make the box cleaner and help the OL have we done tonight or any other night for that matter?
Unless you have a bunch of pro linemen .... and even then it's going to be hard. The offensive line has certainly underperformed...
but I'd argue we have done nothing to help them
