I was interested in this too so we asked around. It means category 5 culture and breaks into the five things they want to define the program — gratitude, enthusiasm, toughness, unity and integrity. I think it would be cool if they made a video breaking it down with highlights and stuff mixed in. Guessing it will be something we hear more about down the road.

Well it might beat other slogans if it really does come with something definitive behind it, unlike all of the "right way" nonsense we hear so often from almost every new coach where it is left for anyone listening to define but mostly means nothing except when it is being used in a passive-aggressive manner to imply someone else is cheating. The only "right way" peeps I won't mock for employing it is Butler and their "Butler Way". Saw it recently when I was looking for a bio of our WBB player from there and "Butler Way" made me chuckle like I always do at it's use. However, it was way more and defined for everyone to see, not just a undefined slogan, and the details are a full page of expectations and commitments for both the school and the athletes.

The twitter length The Butler Way summary:
Demands commitment,
denies selfishness,
accepts reality,
yet seeks improvement everyday
while putting the team above self.

Than they print out an in some depth summary of the code of conduct for their athletics AND staff, including detailed expectations and standards under each of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship. It could be all BS it they don't follow it but they put it out there for everyone to see.

I like the new slogan the program. Hopefully TJ doesn't go all PJ Fleck with it though.

Two random thoughts of mine.

1) C5C = gratitude, enthusiasm, toughness, unity and integrity = G.E.T.U.I. = Get UI = Beat Iowa;)

2) If this C5C goes viral, it'd be a great idea to include the MBB's "Category 5 Culture" in the Ya Boy Matt Campbell's next year's Campbell Madness and have it match up with FB's"5-Star Culture". ;)

Frankly, it seems like a bit of a knock-off on 5-Star Culture! I was hoping for something better.

So I was reading the game notes on cyclones.com and found a section on C5C. It stands for “Category 5 Culture”:

“Category 5 Culture
Gratitude Enthusiasm Toughness Unity Integrity
When T.J. Otzelberger arrived at Iowa State as head coach, one of his first priorities was creating a culture with a number of core val- ues that define Cyclone basketball. Through that process, #C5C was born.”
