Have you ever been embarrassed to wear Cyclone Gear?

Post-game comments about once being a "laughingstock" have popped up more than once this year. Feels like comments are being used to deflect attention and criticism for 2021 disappointments. Grateful for the foundation this coach, staff and players have built in the football program. It's been a blast being part of this (2017 is still my favorite year of the six so far). However, if our past is fair game for criticism, doesn't there have to be a little embarrassment about being pre-season top 10 and ending up way outside the final top 25?

Boy, really picking apart the details today, aren't we?

It's a phrase to indicate that the program has improved from where it had been. Nothing more.

One thing Campbell could have said if you wanted to indicate that the program has improved from where it had been is, "This program has improved from where it had been."

No need to make excuses for what is an uncharacteristically self-aggrandizing comment out of Campbell.

I have never personally been embarassed to wear cardinal & gold. However, I HAVE been embarassed by ISU fans wearing cardinal & gold. Toward the end of the McCarney era, there was a clump of very dissatisfied fans sitting in the lower section, southeast end. We had a televised game, and they wore paper bags over their heads.

This doesn't bother me in the least. Campbell says dumb stuff all the time, especially lately. I'm sure Eisworth is just parroting his coach. Whatever. Just stick around for a few more years and keep winning and you can say whatever you want coach.

Never embarrassed. Wearing ISU gear today. Technically I have it on me 24/7 if you count my ISU tatt.

I wouldn't say 'embarrassed' to represent Iowa State. But, rather embarrassed by the lack of consistent identity over the past 50 years. When I walk into a place, I want people to know who the logo belongs to. Not question what it is. I love the current logo and hope it stands the test of time. Because of the current success, people now are recognizing it at first glance. That was not the case for the 30 years I lived in CA. I still wore it proudly, but was a tad embarrassed people didn't recognize it.

I have bought or in most cases been gifted about 20 items of Cyclone apparel. I live in Dubuque, so I WILL think twice about wearing Cyclone clothing after a loss to the Hawks.

Am I embarrassed? Maybe in some sense, but I view it more as avoiding a negative discussion.

I look at it from a more positive viewpoint. During the Campbell years I can wear my Cyclone gear more proudly! And when travelling outside Iowa, it is a positive conversation starter.

In Stansbury's article, both Eisworth and Campbell said not that long ago before they were here that people were embarrassed to wear a cyclone shirt or hat. I know what there trying to say but I think this comes off poorly. I've been a cyclone fan since 85-86 and I don't ever remember being embarrassed to wear anything Cyclone gear. Many times I've been disappointed or let down, but not embarrassed. I also am an alumnus so maybe that's part of the reason for me.

To me, it is kind of the pervasive attitude in society, "that nothing mattered until I showed up". I think it is somewhat disrespectful to the players and fans that have been here for awhile. Maybe its just the word embarrassed, thoughts?
Always been proud to wear cyclone gear, and ALWAYS do the day after a loss.

90% of the comments from coaches and staff are pretty humble and honest but sometimes they cross the line a bit. I agree with this take ^
The team went 7-6 this year not 11-2. You don’t have to put down Iowa State and it’s history to be proud of a good team. But 7-6 isn’t anything we’ve ever seen before…

not really embarrassed, but maybe more self conscious a few times.
I was traveling back when the 1st major conference realignments were going on and wearing gear when the news broke about mizzou, Nebby and Colorado. I remember several times people coming up to me and saying sorry like I lost a relative or something. keep in mind that was back when we were coming off the Chizik years and year one Rhoads. and 5 straight non winning seasons of ISU bball. Our facilities (especially football) were an embarrassment at the time and things looked bleak. Things are much different now thankfully.

I agree with the statement this is nothing more than a deflection tactic.

This is the season where ISU couldn't get out of its own way.

I will agree that they did put us on the map, but we had a chance to really build some national credibility this year and went the opposite direction.

But I will keep wearing my gear :)

It was definitely a poor choice of words but I understand what they are saying. Try living in the Eastern part of the state and listen to TOE fans after getting shellacked or Western part when Neb used to throttle us. Getting beat down by their fans and having nothing to retort can be a struggle. It is much easier to wear the gear when you your team is good to great.

I’m an alumnus. It’s more than just Sportsball for me and I don’t give a **** about Iowa or Nebraska. Their gear is ugly anyway.

Never been embarrassed.

We are similar to Cubs fans....die hard, love our team, etc.

But it is also fair for outsiders without bias to point out we don't have a robust history

If there was any aggrandizement, I'm confident it was intended to highlight how far the program has come under the leadership of these seniors.

I have never been embarrassed to wear my Iowa State gear. Iowa State is much more than the win/loss records of the sports teams. Win or lose, this is a great university with a long and proud history. Members of the Cyclone Nation have truly used their ISU knowledge to help change the world. Ames will always feel like a second home for me. I will always cheer for the sports teams, win or lose. Cyclone Power forever. Nope, I have never been embarrassed to be a Cyclone.

And there are myriad ways to say that without denigrating the efforts, however futile, of the people who came before you and the tens of thousands of people who pour their energies and finances into supporting your program.
