Post game comments from Oky State Coach regarding their difficulties guarding Brockington:

ON DIFFICULTY IN GUARDING IOWA STATE'S IZAIAH BROCKINGTON:
"Nah, you just give credit. Guys, that's the hard part about doing this, the other team's got good players, they practice, they watch film. A good players is just able to make a good shot under duress. We lived with a guy like that last year, and we saw it. So give credit. That kid's a good player, and we'll obviously have another opportunity to see him again and we'll try to defend him a little better. You force a guy to score 26 points on 20 shots, and many of them challenged, you just pat him on the butt and try to be better next time."

Aside from the talk of IB that's all a good reminder that the round robin will be missed.

There's no way the game in Ames won't have its moments.

Thinking about the game today and this may be a weird thought, but by far my favorite moment of the game was Hunter dogging Anderson (I believe?) as he brought the ball up the court. Tapped it away 2 or 3 times before diving on the floor trying to get the steal. A lot of people would look at the box score or play-by-play and see a foul committed 60 feet from the basket while the other team is in the bonus and think, "wow what a bad foul", but damn I loved it. That type of energy and defensive effort is so inherently valuable. Hunter is a gd junkyard dog man.

So many good things about last night's game. More than anything else, I absolutely love how this team just continues to fight through adversity, bad calls, and "bad" plays. They don't get their head down after a turnover, missed shot, etc.

It's really too bad Brockington will only be here for one year. Correct me if I'm wrong here. He is fast becoming one of my all time favorite Cyclones. Hunter will be on that list too.

Great win!

We actually ran a couple plays for him late in the game and at the end of the first half.
I am aware of that. And he missed the one at the end of the first half.

It's in the 2nd half he shot less. I still think he needs to shoot 'less' when he's not on. That doesn't mean I don't, or Coach doesn't want him to shoot at all.

When Gabe is not on, we find out in the first 10 minutes of the 1st half. He should start shooting less, passing and driving more in that case for the remainder of the half. In the second half, he should get the 'green light' again and use it at his discretion. He might get it back. If he remains 'off' at long range in the second half, same thing, shoot less from long, drive and pass more. I think it's a better way than just shooting the 'whole game from 3' when you're not hitting.

It doesn't mean he should stop shooting. Just use common sense. Less than 20-25% from long range is not great (less than for sure when he's not on). If he gets a good look in rhythm or they run a play for him fine. Not fine too often though if he's not hitting.

I think Gabe understands that all by himself probably. He's been more in control and doing other things to help the team, since a few bad games in the non-conference.

Well most of the time he does have a lane to use if he'd just turn around and use it.
I'd bet now we start seeing some mods on that offensive set with George at the key. It would be nice if he were to occasionally turn and shoot, drive or drive and dish.

Time to keep developing the offense. george had a good game. He is improving. Fingers crossed.

Look at the monster games (efficiency-wise, at least) from Conditt, Grill, and Jones.
Some here have said in the recent past past that Grill just doesn't play defense or dribble well (or something). I didn't see it. In the OSU game. I thought he played great, was not a liability on defense, dribbled well enough.

He's developing. I'll have to watch his game a little closer. Great game by Grill, Conditt and Jones. We needed all three!

Apologies in advance because I think this question has been asked before, but does anyone know if there's a way to listen to a replay of Walters and Heft calling this game?

You can listen to all the games live via radio, John and Eric. Then must wait atleast 2 days (BB; 3 days for FB) to watch the full video replay (with John and Eric).
Revenue goes toward the ISU Athletic Dept.
Pretty good deal I think. They don't get all the replay rights, something about tier rights I don't understand.
Win/win. You get ISU stuff and support ISU at the same time.

One of the things lost in the excitement of winning last night is that Anderson for OSU shot out of his mind. Brockington was great with 26 points but Anderson had 34 points including 5 for 11 from 3, and 9 for 16 from 2. He averages 11 points and 33% from 3. Hopefully he will not be that hot in Ames.

Listening on radio and John and Eric a) made that point and b) explained how it also took maybe 10 seconds off the clock. Good defensive effort as you said.

also when gabe attacks the hoop more, it opens up the perimeter a lot. he seems to be a pretty decent shooter within the arc and driving to the hoop and there were several times last night where he drove and either scored, assisted, or hockey-assisted. once brockington puts it on the floor he's often going to shoot it (which is, in turn, often our best look in a possession) but gabe attacking gives us a few different options and another look to give the defense. you can also play gabe and caleb together more if gabe is handling the ball more and getting inside rather than both of them just kind of roving the 3 point line.

He’s having a Deandre Kane type impact for sure. We wouldnt be a possible tourney team without him. He was such a huge get by Otz

Gabe's mechanics are wildly different shot to shot, pay attention to the differing arc he puts on his shot and you'll see there's not a lot of consistency. Now, I do think he'll have a couple more "on" games which really raises the ceiling for this team, but I'm not convinced it's a head thing so much as a form thing.

You do have a point about the missed bunnies, though.

This is exactly what I see with his shot as well. You want some arc on your shot but he's typically putting too much on his I think. And as you said it varies.

The good thing is mechanics can be fixed in the gym with lots of practice. But, for the rest of this season, we're probably going to have to ride with his shooting being inconsistent.

The guy brings a lot in other areas though, namely "D".

Grill is a weird case to me. For someone who is athletic as he is (and he is very athletic), he doesn't move very fluidly.

He's a starter now.

Maybe TJ switches back to Conditt, but I do not think Jones did anything last night to lose his starting spot. Both of them played similar minutes to what they have the rest of the Big 12 season.

Honestly Jones starting may have just been a technique of trying to keep Conditt out of foul trouble. Let Jones pick up a couple early go with Conditt from there on out. When is the last time we saw Conditt with only 2 fouls at the end of the game let alone a first half? Keep Bob starting and let him pick up the cheapies.

Yeah he's a great leaper and fast but he isn't smooth with his basketball movements
