That was the best performance I have seen by a Cyclone in Hilton since Fizer went off his Junior year against Texas. I don't have words to describe it. Just sensational.

Also, really huge game from Gabe. When he really sets his feet and is in rhythm his shot looks really good.
Gabe has been playing really well in this winning streak. Hasn't been shooting the 3 like last night but has been playing within himself and scoring points without shooting several 3s

I really hope a lightbulb went off in his head and that game sparks a load of confidence in him. That wasn't a fluke game like Texas where everything he threw up went in and there was little pressure. If that was the game that helps him mentally, it'd be impeccable timing for this team.
Gabe has been the second/third best player on the floor for the Clones (behind IZB and Hunter at times) over their 3 game winning streak. He is clearly more comfortable and confident out there and having him contribute is vital to this team's success.

The team really missed him in their tough stretch during the middle of B12 play and were seeing now what can happen when he plays solid/really good/great.

Love seeing him flourish and will look for him to continue it down the stretch of the season.

I'm not going to nitpick on fouls as it is what it is... but poor refs tend to give back a make up call very easily... they did multiple times in ISU favor where WVU hardly ever touched.

The first half they missed 3 of the most basic travels I have ever seen. The one following the block on Rob Jones right at the end of the half??? My word.
You can't just say "it is what it is" when the calls are absolutely atrocious. At some point it screws up the game entirely. Then the obvious make up junk in the second half where they came out and there's 4 quick tweets in what seemed like a minute, all against WVU. What a coincidence... No one wants to see you start making stuff up.

This really bothered me, too, kind of takes the strategy out of timeouts!

Is it common when there is a lead change under 30 seconds to stop the clock and check the time at the monitor? After IB made the basket to give us the lead WV was out of timeouts and rattled and the refs stopped the game and sent both teams to their benches to check the clock. imo WV should not have gotten a free timeout.

I think TJ is doing better about playing to Gabe's strengths.

He can make good passes and defend well. Early in B12 play he was trying to force shots both around the basket and at the 3pt line.

Now you see him looking for the pass instead of putting up a low % (for him) shot. I loved those plays last night where he would drive the lane but then kick it out to the open 3 when he got near the basket.

Sure it can lead to some hesitation on open shots, and you saw a little of that last night in the 1st half, but overall it's a much better fit with Gabe.

When they were going to have ISU inbound under the the WV basket when ISU was in the bonus made me laugh. When a guy drinking beer laying on the couch is more aware of the situation then the refs, that is bad.
In fairness the score board operator in Hilton put West Virginia's 7th foul on Iowa state (marking our 6th foul). It took a few moments to get that right and add the 7th foul to WVU total.

Much later in the game a similar event happened when ISU fouled bc they hadn't changed the 6 back to a five so it looked like it was ISUs 7th foul. They had to go to the official scorebook to check on that one

I saw that same interview. I thought it was almost shocking how blunt and matter-of-fact he was. I can't decide if it's refreshing to hear a coach be honest and genuine, or disgusting to criticize players in the press. Maybe some of each. We were all sick of 'we just need to play defense harder' type responses just a week and a half ago. At this point anyone playing for him knows what they're signing up for. I'm not saying I think it's the right way to go about it, but I'm also not going to be mock-outraged for his players. We've all seen what a lack of accountability leads to, and it's clear Huggy would rather run off players that don't buy in than compromise his team. Still kinda feels wrong to air that laundry in public.
The problem with his statement is that there is a reason why the inbound went to the corner. Our defense took away all other options. Players don't just naturally move to the corner, they are guided there.

I was so upset at the end of the first half that I turned off the game. I apologize for my rant (post #322 i think?) I've been recovering from Influenza A and I was getting so worked up that my symptoms actually started to return (really bad coughing fits). I wasn't even upset with our team, but at the way West Virginia was playing and the refs. I'm glad that we were able to come back. I ended up rocking my sick one year old to sleep while listening to the postgame with John and Eric. A Cyclone radio postgame show after a victory is a great way to relax before sleep.

Exactly. Smart coaches and good players want nothing to do with the corner. Therefore smart coaching and good players scheme to get players in that same said corner. What Huggins should have said "In the time out I told the players to stay out of the corner and we tried, but hats off to Iowa State they funneled us right into the place we all didnt want to be."

Huggy also said his called play on the IZB steal would have worked if they followed instructions because "they had five guys inside the foul line". Not sure what he was watching there.

I guess moreso point being a foul is incredibly subjective. It is supposed to be by the books, but its almost impossible when you factor in crowd & atmosphere. Were there bad foul calls, absolutely.

Guess my point moreso being its easier to tell good and bad officials by consistency, make up calls, travels, etc. These refs were no where near good, but if they consistently called the game tight in the first half and stuck with it, I wouldn't have minded... they just were all over the place. The make up calls against WVU were horrible. They missed multiple travels. Very horrible game flow (not having any idea when bonus kicked in).

Credit to WVU for taking advantage of. They just went one on one drives towards end of game knowing the foul would be called and they shot 90% at the line.

Another gripe - that elbow to face of Grill was extremely similar to Rob Jones at KU. Just happened to get in the way of someones elbow... of course this one not called.

I don’t have any issues with their fans, but I have zero respect for how huggy coaches the game. It is a trash form of bb if you can even call it that. Just push and shove as much as possible and dare the refs to call all the fouls. It’s just ugly and not what the game is supposed to be.
WV has gotten the rep with Huggy but other teams are starting to play overly aggressive also, in the Big 12. It does make BB less enjoyable to watch and follow. It also requires the refs to call the game consistently which they don't and probably can't.

Time to maybe start talking (again perhaps by me) about having one 'remote' referee per game, who is synced to the in-house refs. They could call a more consistent game IMO, not allow games to get one-sided between teams. Not allow excessive influence by coaches such as Huggins and Self who seems to be always whining and complaining to the refs.
