I don't like that they are basically going to ruin the uniqueness of the Field of Dreams with this but you will be surprised just how profitable these complexes are and pay for themselves in just a matter of years in operation. Chamber of commerce for these communities love them too because they bring in new businesses and revenues because the visitors to these complexes need a place to stay and eat while there and will bring in more business for the existing businesses as well.

Just watch the March 22nd city council meeting for Grimes considering taking ownership of a huge complex currently in development: WATCH City Council Meetings | City of Grimes, IA | Official Website (grimesiowa.gov) They broke down some financials and had everyone from youth sports people speak in favor to the chamber of commerce and other people involved in the community wanting to see it happen. There are big $ to be made when these things are built otherwise these people would not be so vocal about them happening.
This. These fields and complexes are going to be booked solid for as much of the year as weather will allow. This place will be a huge regional and maybe even national draw for all kinds of tournaments.

The additional field and having the MLB games etc. played there with the same 'feel' seemed cool but that looks like generic sports complex USA.

Even if they do not have games booked people will be shocked just how in demand having available fields are in metro areas just to hold a practice. The complex I play adult rec softball in Clive had to start locking the fields and forcing little leagues to rent the fields for practice because they were becoming so over-run with that. They'd tear up the fields with their practices and the city figured they may as well be paying fees like the rest of the people that use the fields have to so they are helping pay the costs to maintain the fields too. I don't think anyone batted an eye at paying to rent the fields when they did that because they are supposedly so hard to find open fields anywhere around the metro.

I don't think there's anything more uniquely "middle class dad" than walking into a youth sports facility and saying "boy someone's making a killing off of this."

My personal favorite is the 2 day tournaments that could be accomplished in one day just so they can charge you admission for 2 days.

Middle class dads know that parking is where the real money is...

Might need to go see it before it becomes so commercialized.

I doubt any of the money made stays in Dyersville either.

Admission is chump change. The real money is in the kick-backs from the designated hotels you are required to stay in if you are coming from out of town.

And make sure the visiting teams have a Friday night game, a Saturday game (instead of two Saturday games) and a Sunday game so you get two nights of those hotel rooms.

Especially if that dad is wearing cargo shorts when saying it.
