Even if they do not have games booked people will be shocked just how in demand having available fields are in metro areas just to hold a practice. The complex I play adult rec softball in Clive had to start locking the fields and forcing little leagues to rent the fields for practice because they were becoming so over-run with that. They'd tear up the fields with their practices and the city figured they may as well be paying fees like the rest of the people that use the fields have to so they are helping pay the costs to maintain the fields too. I don't think anyone batted an eye at paying to rent the fields when they did that because they are supposedly so hard to find open fields anywhere around the metro.

Still going to be in Dyersville. Not sure if metro area applies.

This is great. The Movie Site will look basically the same. More youth baseball/softball fields is great.

It should've been reverted back to farmland after the movie. Would've been more profitable.

It actually did, at least the owners of the left & center field portions planted crops on it the year after filming was complete. When people kept coming to visit (and the Lansing family with the infield, right field and the house kept their land in “movie” shape anyway), they stopped farming it and turned it back into the outfield the year after that, so … I don’t know what to tell you.

I agree. The movie was in the late 80's. I think it's okay to rethink this area and develop.
And the movie is still out there for all to watch and enjoy. I'd be willing to bet that a large % of those who will be abhorred by this new stain on Field of Dreams Americana have never even been to the site and rarely, if ever, even think about it. Lots of kids and families from all over the country are going to be able to play games and tournaments out there and it's going to be a very cool thing, maybe moreso for the dads than the kids, but still.

Most rural towns have baseball and softball diamonds sitting idle, especially ones that lost their schools. Teams could probably practice on them for a small price.

Youth club teams can and will.

This. These fields and complexes are going to be booked solid for as much of the year as weather will allow. This place will be a huge regional and maybe even national draw for all kinds of tournaments.
I'll believe that when I see it. It's in the middle of nowhere. I can't imagine people are going to come from all over the country to play baseball in Dyersville Iowa.

They played on the actual Field of Dreams in a special game. That complex will be even more worthless than the Newton Speedway.
No, they didn't. They played on a newly-constructed field that met MLB specs adjacent to the field in the film, which would've been way too small. And there's going to be an MLB game out there every year for the foreseeable future.

I went to the Yankees v. White Sox game out there. Met people from all over the country who said this was a bucket list thing for them. If you seriously think this complex will sit there worthless, we just disagree. National and regional touring baseball and softball club teams will be playing out there at all kinds of tournaments. Not to mention events for in-state schools and teams. There are big complexes like this all over the country that host sporting events throughout the year, and not all of them are around big cities. But none of them can attach the "Field of Dreams" name to their events like this one will.

I don't see it. It would be different if Dyersville was like 45 minutes from Des Moines or something.

This country is such a joke.... we just can't leave s**t alone can we. We always have to go and F it all up and try to make huge money off of everything.

Whatever.... I don't really even care if this whole thing goes under and bankrupts the ones starting it. Wouldn't bother me one bit.

How many youth in this country even know what the Field of Dreams even is? How many know it was even a movie?

You seem to care an awful lot for someone who doesn't care.

Before this thread posted, when was the last time you thought about the Field of Dreams? I'm willing to bet it's been awhile, at least to back when the Yankees game was all over the news last summer. And then prior to that, I'm guessing you hadn't thought about the Field of Dreams for years. So why does this bother you so much? The field from the film, the farmhouse, the bleachers, the yard, are all still there, intact.

Initially I wanted to say this is a terrible idea, the ruining of something nostalgic, but then I realized...

- I'm indifferent (at best) toward the movie
- I visited the site nearly 20 years ago with friends, and unlike my friends who had this "best day ever" impression, I was like "well, that was a thing" (more indifference - to me it was more about hanging out with my friends than anything else. Could have spent the day at a corn maze and I would have probably had similar feelings)
- I have no intentions of ever visiting the site again of my own volition. My wife's family wanted to make a summer trip out of this and my first impression was "do we really have to?"
- I haven't lived in Iowa for more than a decade, much less nowhere near the site, so this has no bearing on me whatsoever.

And finally

- This is private property, so the owners can do whatever the hell they want and whatever I think about it is just another opinion - and you know what they say about how opinions are like ***holes...

So basically I just don't care.

The private property piece is key. If they have the people investing, go for it. It could create jobs (with interesting little commutes).

I’m shocked you would have such a negative opinion.

Everything that made Field of Dreams great will be lost. Being surrounded by corn fields in the middle of nowhere is one of the biggest draws of the story. Now it will be surrounded by restaurants and light poles. This sucks.

Build a ******* youth ball park in Waterloo or Dubuque or wherever. Hell, build it on the other side of Dyersville for Pete's sake.

Don't ruin Field of Dreams.
