People who thought NIL wasn’t the end of college athletics were fools. That can be good or bad depending on your perception of it but that was always going to be the end result. College sports fans aren’t rational. And that includes the ones with money to spend.
I don't think they actually meant it was the literal end, but who knows. But I don't see how any of this conference realignment, new tv deals and NIL doesn't hurt us. I am sure we will be fine, but we already have enough of a battle being located in Ames, Iowa. Just seems like more and more things going against us.

Also, I could see the NIL turning cancerous in the lockeroom. Lets say we do get Hunter $1M next year. I could see if ISU starts struggling next year and Hunter hits a wall other guys being bitter about getting nothing and he is getting rich for not producing. so many issues with all of this.

put a limit on this and half the issue is solved.

Its like the rolled out an application with out a plan or testing anything. (in the IT World)

I'm guessing JP managed to get some sort of donor help to fund the $5 mil to get rid of Prohm. Surely, we could find the donor help to fund $1 mil to keep Tyrese.

I don't believe Jamie and the coaches in place want to be spenders in the NIL marketplace for athlete's. If business people, donors, etc. want to create funds, so be it. But they aren't going to actively pull money away from projects that benefit the greater/long-term AD/University goals.

NIL has just legalized what had been happening in the sleazy side of "big time" college sport to pay athletes.

My guess is JP has coaches in place in Matt and TJ who don't want NIL to be a corner piece of their programs or recruiting approach. In other words if guys can make Honda Civic $ awesome. But not Lamborghini money.

From a school and coach perspective I understand that approach. If Jamie/TJ coordinate behind the scenes to get Tyrese six-figure $ where does it stop? He'll want that money next season as well. If Eli King blows up and is our leading scorer- then he'll want to get paid. And if we have another NCAA Tournament team- there will be more than 1-2 basketball starters that want coin.

Then that mentality will carry over to the FB, WBB, VB, etc teams. This isn't JUST about NIL $ for Tyrese. This is about 6 figure NIL money for maybe a dozen athletes across multiple ISU teams.

Iowa state is just in a bad position here for awhile if not 2-5 years and maybe forever. Do you spend less time recruiting high school kids and focus more of your time on the portal? My opinion is portal. Your roster is going to be extremely different every year now, it will be rare for a player to stay 3-4 years especially if they are a big time player for your program.

The ripple effect from this in my opinion is going to be negative as fans will just stop caring and may stop donating. It is way way out of control. Our next tv contract for the conference is extremely crucial to where you can set aside some cash to play the game sort of speak. It’s ********.

I can’t wait till players start having to give post game interviews like NASCAR drivers. I would like to thank “insert 8 different companies names” before saying any thus out the game they just played

Absolutely. I was the same in Track. My Junior year I got Tuition paid for. My Senior year I got the full ride. The excess cash I got my senior year I used to pay for my fiance's tuition bill. So to do the math: That is 2! educations for 1. I was on cloud frickin 9. Never once did the "oh whoa is me" go through my mind. I got a free pair of tennis shoes every month, I got 3 free meals a day. I worked my butt off for it and the day coach called me into his office and told me was the greatest day of my athletic career. So now, that same fiance turned wife and I are blessed financially to where we are donors giving back to the school that gave me my life. Forgive me for getting insanely frustrated in the NIL. Apparently I have to give more so some athlete stays to play for the same school that gave me everything because what they are getting now isnt enough?
How much revenue did you generate for the ad?

Does track and field make money at Iowa State? Serious question, I don’t know

IMO you continue recruiting HS. And also go the Portal. Bluebloods will pay the elite talent. Many who will sit on the bench as insurance policies against injuries. And the stockpiling of talent on blue blood benches means those talented players are not on other teams.

At some point players want to play. And those elite talent bench players probably won’t develop since they won’t be gaining playing experience.

I agree - I'm not sure why people can't understand that it can simultaneously be great for the current and near-term college athletes while ruining college athletics in the long run.

But would I expect a kid in college now like Tyrese to turn down a nice NIL deal because it might be one of many such NIL deals that contribute toward the eventual college sports bubble popping? Pretty unrealistic and unfair.

The real cost of this thing is going to be in a whole lot of stories that you never hear about. Guys that go into the portal and never find a landing spot. Guys who are in demand after a good year, but transfer to find out that they succeeded because they were a good fit where they had been. Guys that never get the chance to land a scholarship because transfers are taking some of their opportunities.

If there is a huge NIL deal out there to take and that's why he goes, fine. How does he know that before entering the portal? That's what is fishy to me. If he wants to leave because he just doesn't want to be at ISU, that's fine too.

JP managed to raise $5 mil to pay Prohm to not be here anymore (actually $10 mil to snag Otz as well). Thus, I think it's plausible we're capable of raising significantly less to keep Tyrese.
The difference is firing Prohm and hiring TJ wasn't an investment in 1 or 2 seasons. It was an investment in the next 15-20 years of Cyclone basketball. It was about continuing selling out Hilton Coliseum.

If Tyrese can make 6 figured through NIL, I wish him the best even if that is at another school. Basketball is his desired profession and he needs to make decisions that are best for his family.

I'm disappointed if he's not on next year's team. But next man up.

Wouldn't those things all happen without NIL too?

All I know is that there is no way these people will get anywhere near their return on investment for these NIL deals. Sure, the school benefits but they don’t put any money in. What do I get if I put money in? Wins? I’m sorry, that does nothing for me.

This is not indictment on Tyrese Hunter or his character. If it comes out that he's getting a bunch of money to go somewhere else, good for him. We would have all done that as an 18/19 year old.

You can call it an indictment of the current NCAA system but that's not really going to get you anywhere.

This was GOING to happen at some point to Iowa State with how behind we are with NIL collectives, etc. Hopefully Iowa State can use this negative and turn it into a positive to spur momentum into that scene so that we can limit it happening in the future.

I get frustrated by people saying "I'm not watching anymore...etc" - imagine how VCU, Ohio and Wright State fans feel? We're doing the same thing (minus the NIL) but hell, we don't even know for sure we're not dangling something for them to come here.

The bottom line is EVERY school (minus a select few) is a junior college now. You better not only be actively recruiting your current roster but you better be fighting like crap to get them money (if they're good) while they achive things on your campus. If you're not (and probably even if you are), they will leave.

I think the focus HAS to be to shift focus from recruitng HS kids and move it to securing talented kids who just completed their FR or SOPH years at another schools. This way, when they come here, they're less likely to transfer having already used up their free one-time transfer.

Not any different than MLB, NFL or NBA free agency. It's just a tougher lesson to learn for an 18-20 year old.

Right now we are in the Wild West period of NIL and Transfer Portal- my guess a new "normalized" structure will evolve in the next 3-5 years.

High major schools won’t keep recruiting high school kids. Our only protection is the “transfer once” rule. High school kids are going to play in the MVC, MAC, OVC etc and then move up.
