If the Pac12 believes that UO and UW are staying, they will VERY likely stick together, just like the Big12 did. They will look at it as the least bad option. And I don't think they will have any luck trying to poach any Big12 teams. I know they wanted Houston, but at this point is Pac12 better for Houston than Big12? I don't think so.

FWIW I agree with the Fox guy who said Big12+Pac12 = 22 conference makes sense. It's better visibility for the west coast schools wrt TV slots and market, for sure. I thought that BEFORE USC/UCLA dipped out. Now, its probably even more important. But for the Big12, other than stability via sheer size, I am not sure how much it helps - maybe it's a little more tv revenue per school, idk.
Our best option is to go to 16-18, with the B1G and SEC staying at 16. When they crack into the ACC we do as well. When it’s all said and done we want to have the same amount of teams as them whether it’s 20,22, 24 or whatever. They will keep matching numbers.

Don’t water it down now.

Way up there
Grab the 4 corners schools, then Oregon and UW have to make a move. If they don't want to come, shut things down until the ACC fallout. I like 16, I think 18 is about the ceiling right now, you want some flexibility when the ACC gets picked apart. Even if you had 6/8 pac 12 teams stick together and expand, that's only lasting a until the ACC stuff goes down anyway, you'll have another shot at those teams then.

Drop the word “big” and use the word “Power” and then the number of teams. So if we end up with 18. We would be the Power 18.
If the Big12 merges and becomes a mega conference, I would just drop the #.

Go with a Conference name like:
Great America or All American or Big Atlantic Pacific or Big Bang.

I'm sure a marketing consulting firm can be hired to come up with something catchy.

ACC GOR may make it too expensive for the SEC to expand right now. Until ND is ready to move to the B1G, there will be no further expansion there.

Then the only remaining question is whether the B12 can convince at least one P12 school to jump. If one goes, then the rest will move fast.

If that doesn't happen, then the P12 will likely add SDSU and SMU for now. Eventually when Stanford and/or Oregon leave, it will open up the four corners schools to jump to the B12.

It's almost like this whole saga of ND is the Big 10 toying with SEC and Fox toying with ESPN, like the SEC and ESPN did last year. The Big 10 got what they wanted SC and UCLA and they figured while they were at it, let's rattle the cages and see if what ESPN and SEC does when they toss out the possibility of ND, knowing it was unlikely. In the end, the Big 10 and SEC enjoyed getting all the cold calls, which cements their status in the media. That is what is sick. Playing their games and messing with other programs and the future of college athletics.

It's a game of musical chairs. If you're one of the 4 corner schools and you look around, there are so many dominoes that could fall. You have to be worried about a number of you're own conference schools getting poached if ND goes to the B1G. But I think even more concerning to those schools should be the ACC breaking apart entirely. If that happens all hell breaks loose. Suddenly a whole bunch of schools could be available to the Big XII that aren't right now. The 4 corners have a chair at the Big XII table right now. That may not be the case if the ACC suddenly gets raided. If they aren't careful some of the 4 corners could be left in whatever hellscape of college football the leftovers of the PAC-12 combined with the MW looks like.

I'm glad ISU isn't in that position... for the moment. We've certainly had our share of times we were staring into the abyss only to be rescued at the last moment. At least the 4 corner schools have options that ISU seemingly never had when it looked like the Big XII was going to fold.

Maybe this was already posted and I missed it, but that same writer put out this piece yesterday, which I found to be pretty fcking rich.

Sankey = Putin

He makes the first move to blow up the Big12 conference and by staying at 16 that somehow absolves the SEC go forward.

What did Sankey/SEC expect? The Big10 was going to be idle and stick to 14. My guess, is USC & UCLA shopped themselves to both conferences.

The SEC will expand again when it makes financial sense.

Interesting tidbit in an athletic article

I mean OK, but ISU fans are probably not going to travel any better on an 1800 mile road trip weekend than the teams they are currently used to, once the novelty wears off.

Western alumni will definitely be interested in viewing some of these games live.

A Pac12/ Big12 merger might make sense.

The Big10/SEC realignment moves are characterized by big game hunting. Culling off the most valuable schools from the Big12/Pac12 to maximize per school media payouts.

A Big12/Pac12 merger has the same end goal, maximize per a school media payouts. But that can only be achieved by culling off the weakest!

The question is:
  1. Who are the least valuable media payout teams in the Big12 & Pac12?
  2. Among those 22 teams, if a merged conference included let's say only 16 of those teams, would that make a big difference in per school payouts?
After all, it would be idealistic to think a Big12/Pac12 merger wouldn't be driven by money.
