John Denver. Had a true romantic quality to his work.

All alone in the universe.
Sometimes that's how it seems.
I get lost in the sadness
and the screams.
Then I look in the center.
Suddenly everything's clear.
I find myself in the sunshine
and in my dreams.

Find the Drive-By Truckers "Live at the 40 Watt" DVD. He's absolutely shredding all over it.

When I lived at Hyland and Lincoln Way in 2007-2008, our Friday afternoon pre-bar ritual was to put that on and crank it loud to enough to hear in Friley and drink heavily.

The Truckers were really cooking back then and I have always kind of wished that that lineup would have stayed together. Maybe upgrade Shonna, but every Beatles needs a Ringo.

Neil Peart wrote nearly all the Rush lyrics. Maybe not poetic, but certainly no sex. drugs and rock n roll lyrics. Most have an underlying theme or storyline.
In the same vein I'd add Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. A bunch of songs about D&D type stuff, etc.
I'm surprised they haven't been on Stranger Things.

Behind you
Gonna throw Sturgill Simpson into the mix. Guy knows how to write a song. A few gems...

Every time I take a look
Inside that old, fabled book
I'm blinded and reminded
Of the pain caused by some old man in the sky.

There's a gateway in our minds that leads somewhere out there, far beyond this plane...
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain...

As much as it pains me to agree with your smelly hawk ass, I completely agree with you.

Some specific references from list I posted earlier (bit-by-bit).

Easy to take Chuck Berry for granted, but when it comes to template for rock ’n’ roll lyrics/“youth” storytelling & themes, Berry is legendary. (Not to mention the guitar-playing style and stage presence, but that’s a separate topic).

Tip-of-iceberg:

"Ridin' along in my automobile / My baby beside me at the wheel / I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile / My curiosity runnin' wild / Crusin' and playin' the radio / With no particular place to go." (No Particular Place to Go)

“So I let out my wings and then I blew my horn / Bye bye, New Jersey, I’ve become airborne.” (You Can’t Catch Me)

"You know my temperature's rising / The jukebox blowing a fuse / My heart's beating rhythm and my soul keep a-singing the blues // Roll over, Beethoven / Tell Tchaikovsky the news." (Roll Over Beethoven)
