But why didn't they have that all hammered out if that was the case, and announce it all at once? I don't think that's it at all.

Because of the ACC and not knowing how much room is there for more PAC.

Although it’s quick and easy to accept the begging PAC schools, the ACC, and to a degree that involves ND, takes some time to workout the needed settlement and how many schools can be had

And there hasn’t been much time given the BIG is still new to the P2 vision. USC and FOX had to hit them with it in the face this spring.

But it won’t take anywhere near 14 years. Warren implied a year in his comments imo. Plausible the extra year compared to previous GOR length is factoring that in

I haven't been following this closely but how the hell is Big12, ACC and Pac12 going to survive? SEC, Big10 and ND are going to take over NBC, FOX and CBS. Big12, PAC12 and ACC are going to fight over ESPN spots?

Fox OTA still has two other time slots available. The Big 10 is taking one of them. So there'd be some room there, but if CBS and NBC are done, the options for OTA exposure is limited.

At first glance, this seems like around $67 mil per school before the conference takes its cut. Not sure what the college football playoff and bowls would elevate this to but it seems (???) short of the $100 mil per school they were touting?

Really don't love that we're basically competing with the SEC and ACC for the only OTA spots available (ABC noon/3:30/primetime)

"The Big Ten is projected to eventually distribute $80 million-$100 million per year to each of its 16 members. According to USA Today, the league distributed $54.3 million to most of its members during the most recent fiscal year (2019-20) not impacted by the coronavirus pandemic."

I don't either, but Fox will still have two spots as it looks like the Big 10 will be taking the noon kickoff slot. But the options for exposure for our conference is limited.

Rutgers went 5-8 last year and hasn't had a winning season since 2014. Wake me when it happens.
They’ve had an uptick in recruiting classes and Schiano is a good coach who has done it before. They have already improved drastically since he got there.

Don't assume that CBS and FOX are off the table. They are both basically showing only one B1G game per week.

Others may disagree but I think it is more important to have at least one Big 12 game on an OTA network channel each week than it is to maximize revenue. I would rather take slightly less money from CBS to get first pick of Big 12 games and putting it on at 11 AM or 7 PM vs Amazon getting it, even if Amazon was going to promote the s**t out of it.

Anyone know how much money the state contributes to the colleges? Because if I were supplementing the institutions, I'd be thankful the media can contribute so I can defer funds to others needing it more. Just a wild thought.
I posted earlier that when the University of Iowa's Ath Dept starts pulling in $100 million/yr while the rest of the University is forced to make cuts due to the continued decline in state appropriations, it's going to get really heated.

The Ath Dept doesn't exist without the University, so I don't think there's any way Iowa's Ath Dept will be able to avoid subsidizing the rest of the University.

Rutgers is going to be legit good soon.
They played four ranked teams and lost by an average of 23 points. They were a bad team that beat worse teams. Nothing more. Schiano has recruited pretty well and had a nice run in the Big East. But he’s a real douche and wears thin fast, so he better start winning pretty fast.

They got better because improving from the team that didn’t even belong on the same field as Dave Beaty’s Kansas Jayhawks us as low a bar as you could have.

The games on SECN &ACCN are tier3, just like Big12 games on ESPN+.

With the 2021/22 season ESPN started putting non-conference football and basketball games on ESPN+. So just a matter of time before they start moving conference games to a streaming platform.

The conference networks are successful only because cable and streaming companies pass the carriage costs to 100% of customers. Here are numbers from Variety showing "regular" viewership by customers for each sports network:
  • BTN - 4.1%
  • SECN - 3.1%
  • ACCN *2.2%
Just a matter of time before cable & streaming companies push back and conference networks are part of a subscription model.
To be honest, this could happen to the BTN in California.
