Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

"Hy-Vee is employee-owned by direct stockholders — officers, district store directors and executive staff members — and indirect stockholders, the more than 45,000 Hy-Vee employees who participate in The Hy-Vee and Affiliates 401(k) Plan. A portion of the matching contributions made by the company to The Hy-Vee and Affiliates 401(k) Plan is directed to the Hy-Vee Stock Fund. This account is the largest shareholder in the company."

So Kroger would buy all of them out and most would see a nice little bonus. Or maybe it would be some kind of stock for stock deal where their shares get exchanged for Kroger stock, which is publicly traded.

I guess I’m wondering who gets the big bucks. It seems odd that a majority of Hy-Vee lifers would want to get out, and there’s no founder or VCs pushing to go public. If it’s Edeker… that explains a lot.

All of the store directors (at successful stores), their bosses and the execs at corporate make massive coin. Everyone else, no. Second in charge at a store typically Is well under six figures.

At least their produce bags are better than HyVee’s, which last time I was there, a kiwi managed to break.

Publix is a pretty decent store. They were great for getting my son a birthday cake from a distance. They remind me a bit of HyVee before it went nuts selling sporting goods, soap bombs, shoes, toys, medical clinics, etc. Was a good store for my son with limited cooking skills.

Wegman’s also a decent store in NY area. And when we lived in Indiana, always shopped at Martin’s and it was fine. Same with Dillon’s in Kansas when son was there, it was similar to HyVee without open air soap bombs so I could actually go in the store.
2nd the Wegman’s shoutout!

Hy-Vee Chinese food has gone massively downhill. We all used to love their eggrolls but they changed something and I can't eat them anymore. Yuck.
It depends on the store, some Chinese departments are better than others depending on who makes it. I've had better Chinese food at some Hy-Vees than I have at an actual Chinese restaurant. You can find differences within the Des Moines Metro area stores with the quality of Chinese food sadly enough ad some of the guys that make the food are just better at it than others

Something weird is going on with our Hy Vee, just in the last few weeks every bit of meat we've bought has gone bad. I mean if I don't cook it in a day it reeks. Not so with the other stores, so something has to be going on there.

Cooler problems in the meat dept. 5 extra degrees goes a long ways in bacterial growth and making things go bad. Have you informed them of the problem.

We’ve generally have had good luck at Waukee hy-chi.

Though my favorite trip was when I asked for a two entree meal, but with no rice. The girl working told me it would cost me extra to leave the rice off. I think my brain turned upside down while I was staring at her blankly.

The Chinese at the West Lakes store at University and Jordan Creek Parkway may be the best in town. The Grimes Chinese was pretty sketchy when they first opened but they must have changed something because it is much better than it was at first.

The best Chinese food in the Des Moines Metro right now is either Iron Wok near the Jordan Creek Wal-Mart or Rolling Wok off 141 near the Urban Loop. I'll gladly take recommendations for better options but those 2 places are solid.

I’d like to think in her head it was substitute rice with more entree, but you never know these days.

The HyChi at the Jordan Creek store has been the tops I've ever had from HyVee. Been that way ever since that store opened.

It has always intrigued me how much stuff like HyChi can vary from store to store. The CR Edgewood store is the gem of metro stores on all fronts IMO. Only store that I know of that closes the can and bottle return room for cleaning everyday.

On the flip side, Mills Civic is really poor. When I was in the air guard the Fleur HyChi and deli were elite.

This was a long time ago but our meat, deli, and bakery managers made pretty decent money but they worked their ass off. You're right, the store directors at successful stores were the ones who made a ton. It would probably surprise people which stores are the successful ones. It's usually not the huge new stores.
I think some of this has changed in recent years because they now have regional directors over multiple stores and I believe the store managers that have regional directors make a lot less money.

3rd. I was in upstate New York for work, several years ago. And I asked the office that was visiting what are some things that I should check out while I was there. And one of the main suggestions was "Go to Wegmans". I asked if it was a bar or a restaurant, and they were like "It's a grocery store!"

I remember thinking it was an odd place to suggest visitors go, but I did check it out. And while it wasn't exactly what I would call a tourist destination, it was a pretty awesome grocery store.
