Watched them again this summer, one of the most obvious examples of greed going too far. There was one great movie in there, you just have to sit through 6 hours of filler to get all of it.
I enjoyed the Hobbit movies. Mostly because I was old enough to appreciate them.

We took our oldest two to Fellowship of the Ring when they were 10 and 7. They were so upset about Gandalf, I couldn’t leave them hanging, so I read the first two books out loud to them. The younger kids listened too, and then our oldest read the third book and The Hobbit to his brothers. At this point they have all read more Tolkien than I have. Unlike me, they have all slugged their way through The Silmarillion.
Hope it's as amazing as it looks...

Silmarillion is REALLY tough getting started. Read it, dislike it, then read it again and LOVE it.
It's like if the Old Testament and the Illiad had a baby, and it was raised by the Dungeons&Dragons Deities and Demigods reference manual.
Yeah, first time through that I was trying to read it like it was a continuous story, but obviously it's more of a collection of stories/histories of Middle Earth. Second and third times through were better for me too.
The CGI looks good, the tone looks about right. But what story will it be? I've been trying to sort it out, how it fits into the Silmarilion, but hard to tell. Could mean it's just how the trailer was cut, or it could mean they just wrote a new story in that setting and dgaf about Tolkien.
I read the Hobbit to my daughter as well. It was the first real novel I read and I loved it as a kid. Unfortunately it didn't grab my daughter's imagination the same way it did me. Surprisingly she likes Chronicles of Narnia much more, which I was never that into. She is all about Harry Potter now which is a great series of books as well so I'm good with that.
I loved Lord of the Rings. Started to read the Silmarillion once but noped out of that pretty quick. I'm not that into the lore that much. But I'll definitely watch this show! It looks fantastic!
I agree on the Silmarillion, but there are kernels of epic stories/movies in there if you can slog through the rest of it.
The only hobbit movie I've seen is the 80s animated one. Peak 80s animation
I loved the animation in that movie! The same studio, Topcraft, did The Last Unicorn, another one of my childhood favorites. Eventually that studio would split up and Studio Ghibli formed out of that. Other members of that studio went on to do Thundercats. Great animation IMO.

The songs are just... odd. But the voices of John Huston as Gandalf and John Boone as Smaug's voice were fantastic.

Most of the songs that I can remember were straight from the book. Part of my sentimentality to the animated version is due to watching it in maybe 3rd grade (at school) and I was just riveted by the story. Went right out and read the book after that.
Maybe I will have to try again in my old age and make some charts to keep track of things.
My boys love all of those but pretty sure all five would rank LOTR>HP>CofN
I could never get past the character Jackson made up played by Evangeline Lily. Just a big no for me.
