I loved the animation in that movie! The same studio, Topcraft, did The Last Unicorn, another one of my childhood favorites. Eventually that studio would split up and Studio Ghibli formed out of that. Other members of that studio went on to do Thundercats. Great animation IMO.
Yeah I definitely could see some crossover with Thundercats animation too, so many great late 70s early 80s animated flicks I caught on their 2nd or 3rd runs.

I could never get past the character Jackson made up played by Evangeline Lily. Just a big no for me.
If it wasn’t in the story as written it shouldn’t have been in the movie/movies. To think they could improve Tolkien’s story was ridiculous. The first movies of both The Hobbit and LOTR were significantly better than the second and third installments because they generally stayed true.

Maybe I will have to try again in my old age and make some charts to keep track of things.:p
Theres genealogical charts in the back, so you know its a gripping read lol.

Also, make a list of people with multiple names, that helps. Like 20 characters have 3 or 4 names each. That drove me nuts, so confusing.

I think it looks like a winner from the last trailer.

I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the ride.

Also, it’s nice to have House of the Dragon and TORing happening at the same time. We’re basically guaranteed a movies worth of quality fantasy content for the next however many weeks. It’s nerd heaven.

PS - Wheel of time sucks.

Would've taken these in July and August to get through the lull of summer. Football starts Saturday. We went from a few shows to watch to not enough time to get to it all.

It's not great, but in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

The songs are just... odd. But the voices of John Huston as Gandalf and John Boone as Smaug's voice were fantastic.

Edit: Smaug's voice was John Boone (Have Gun, Will Travel). themoreyouknow
Don’t forget Roger Daltry from The Who, s Bilbo! Yeah I loved the cartoon too.

Definitely agree on the wheel of time thing. They changed the core of how the One Power works. Which means they will have to change at least 50% of all the storylines in the novels. And the thing is, because of the power imbalance between individual users of Saidin and Saidar in the novels I knew they would feel they had to.

That shouldn't have come as a surprise if you read LotR. Remember Gandalf the Grey/Gandalf the White/Mithrandir/The Grey Wanderer/Greyhame/Storm Crow/The White Rider or Strider/Aragorn/Elessar/Longshanks/Dunadan?

I actually thought some things were interesting - Gandalf and his companions driving the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur wasn't necessarily part of the main story, but that's where Gandalf went when he left them and it was kind of cool to see.

It's funny how much he retconned the original Hobbit with his later writings and versions of the Hobbit.

My favorite recent theory I've heard is that Tom bombodil is the yin to the yang of sauron and it more powerful than him. Not sure if it's based on the books or just a fan theory. Saw it on reddit.

That was something while not directly addressed via the text was at least part of the overall story.

Bombadil was a Maia like Sauron and Gandalf? I could see that. Many of the Maiar were "in charge" of something like the sun, moon, coastal waves. It was kind of implied he had something to do with plants/soil/growth and Goldberry the waters. I suspect JRRT had these ideas in his mind, but only ever referred to them sidelong in print.

At least that was alluded to within the story. Much of the fluff in the Hobbit was not.

Saw episode 1 of The Rings of Power and I'll say it is alright so far I guess. Hard to make too much judgement at this point. Lots of setup and a bit slow, but some beautiful visuals. Will admit I wish I was drawn more to the characters and actors playing them already, but willing to give them more time to grow on me at this point.

We watched the first two. I really like it. Galadriel and Elrond both seem like strong characters and well acted. My wife struggled with the first one as it is all set up and it made her tired. Probably helps that I recognize a lot of the names (though some I do not, and may be new creations).

I remember feeling emotionally exhausted near the end of Fellowship of the Ring and just wanting the movie to end already, watching it for the first time in the theater. We tend to forget such things after time, as things grow on us. Another example is that some people who bitterly hated the Star Wars prequels are suddenly fans of them after the sequel trilogy and claiming they never hated the prequels at all.

Time will tell if this series endures the test of time the way Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings has and his Hobbit movies have not.

A lot of people have panned the show by saying "it isn't Tolkien". Well, it is the very first totally-original unadapted work taking place in Tolkien's world that we have ever had. Comparing it to an adapted work like Peter Jackson's trilogy is a bit unfair. It will feel "wrong" to some people no matter what. This is unavoidable. The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings are the only novels Tolkien's world. Making something that takes places at another point in time in Tolkien's world means taking liberties with some things because there is nothing concrete to base it on. (The Silmarillion is more like an encyclopedic collection of very short stories than a novel, and the Amazon producers didn't have the rights to it anyway)

I did like these shows much more than I was expecting to. I thought the second episode was much better than the first, and my interested increased a lot when Celebrimbor was introduced much earlier than I was expecting. I thought the trolls in this show look more like trolls than the hobbits or trolls in Peter's Jackson's movies. (The is my biggest beef with his movies, the hobbits and trolls look just like little humans, which they are not supposed to be) I had no problem with the female trolls not having beards, Tolkien himself was very, very wishy-washy on whether female trolls had beards.

I don't think "meteor man" is Sauron, and I hope he isn't Gandolf.
