I was in graduate school in Lincoln in the late 70’s/early 80’s. If there is anyone old enough to Remember this, UNL fielded almost all the prop 48 players in the league. K-State would have a handful but the remaining teams didn’t allow partial qualifiers.I just don’t see Nebraska every being “Nebraska” again. What do they have to sell…a big stadium and that they were good 30 years ago? In the 90s they were one of the programs always on TV getting exposure, had a ridiculous walk on program among other things. Now everyone is on TV, everyone has facilities and there’s much easier places to recruit to than Lincoln (which is close to zero recruiting hotbeds). I’m 30 years old, have been a huge college football fan for about 15 years. I literally only know Nebraska football as an average at best team.
All this...UNL isn't special anymore in any way. No more cheating, no more partial qualifyers, no more criminals, no more steroids...their strength program isn't special anymore, their walk on program isn't special anymore, talented kids leave the state on the regular now, they have to import talent more than ever before because the option is also not special anymore. Everyone needs to listen to the younger folks posting on this board. The perception AND reality is that UNL is not special. And they won't (can't) be.I was in graduate school in Lincoln in the late 70’s/early 80’s. If there is anyone old enough to Remember this, UNL fielded almost all the prop 48 players in the league. This along with recruiting/retaining players of questionable character were the big reasons UNL was such a top program. With their demographics I don’t ever see them being relevant again and that is just fine with me. Suck it Nebraska!
I think Nebraska is a decent coach away from having a perennially solid 7-10 win program (like an Oklahoma State, Iowa, Michigan State, etc.).All this...UNL isn't special anymore in any way. They still have some advantages. They are the only school in the state, they have a huge fan base that will donate like crazy if they start winning, they are in one of the only 2 conferences that will make serious money. Surprisingly NUs staff has been terrible. If they hire the right coach they will be winning again. Not at the rate they did at their prime but they can be pretty good.I just don’t see Nebraska every being “Nebraska” again. The game that broke the Nebraska football program imo was 11/23/2001 vs. Colorado in Boulder. They got obliterated which was crazy at the time.
Ever since that day, the decline has been in place. I think Bo Pelini demonstrated what a pretty good coach could do in the modern CFB landscape with Nebraska, but once Tom Osborne was forced out as AD, Pelini was fired shortly thereafter.
Everyone in the P2 has money now. That marginalized NU’s great support. They still have some advantages. The 8:00 minute mark in all its glory. It should really be posted multiple times in any Nebraska-related thread, or maybe just every thread regardless.
It's kind of funny--B1G fans still want to think that the reason NE isn't any good is because they moved conferences. I was out with some friends yesterday who are WI fans and I had to explain to them about how Nebraska as a program never really recovered after that decimation in 2001, and while they still had some decent teams throughout the 2000s, they were never NEBRASKA again.
Another point which I didn’t mention above; we like to think here about how boring the Big Ten is but that being said, they play pretty tough football. Nebraska seems to be one of the softest teams I’ve ever seen. I think NW ran ten or eleven straight runs up the middle and just gashed Nebraska. Anything negative happens and they fold. Seems most years their recruiting is rated pretty high but they don’t produce many nfl players. Their program sucks too to bottom and I’m quite satisfied with that.
Worst positioned P2 team? They haven’t won for a decade and they still sellout a huge stadium. Look how many showed up yesterday. Yes all the P2 teams will have money but Nebraska has support beyond most of those teams. All they have to do is hire the right coach. If they make a hire like ISU did they will have bags of money coming in. Money will mean more than ever now with the NIL and transfer rule. Nebraska is one of those teams that is capable of bringing in serious cash but they have to make a good hire and they haven’t done that.Everyone in the P2 has money now. That marginalized NU’s great support.
They are the worst positioned P2. All they have is history, and that’s quickly fading. What led to decades of success is gone.
They’ll never again be a top tier program, although they can have the occasional top team like nearly anyone can.
Exactly why not a soul should feel bad for him. If he didn’t trust his defense and felt he needed the ball back to score again, why would he then trust his defense on a short field and try such a low percentage play? It screams desperation. He’s completely screwed and he knows it.Attempting an onside kick after going up by 11 points in the middle of the third quarter when was one of the worst coaching decisions I have ever seen. The risk far exceeded the potential reward.
Holy crap….that story about microwaving liver and the groin injury…..that’s awesome!who knows if any of this is true but interesting thread
Craziest Husker related football story you have heard?
Anyone of a certain age knows that Frank Solich liked the drink and the ladies. For years you could get away with it because it wasn't really a thing. It was a perk. Frank was hardly the only sports coach to indulge. But by the year 2000, it was getting pretty dangerous. Frank got a DUI in...www.huskerboard.com

Every game, thousands of tickets are bought up to keep the sell out streak going.Worst positioned P2 team? They haven’t won for a decade and they still sellout a huge stadium. Honestly I could see them making a serious run after Urban. He was a disaster in the NFL and a scumbag, but he's proven to be a great college coach. There are rumors that Urban Meyer was in Cayman Nebraska.
sorry. too easy.
I realize that, but they are being bought up and most schools aren't going to have someone step up to do that when the team is as bad as it is. In college football it all comes down to the coaching staff. Look at Iowa State and what the staff has done for you guys. Now take Nebraska's potential to raise serious money and imagine what they could do with a really good coaching staff. I'm not saying they will win multiple NCs again but there's no reason they can't win consistently and be a player in the Big 10. They have to make the right hire and so far they haven't been able to do that.Every game, thousands of tickets are bought up to keep the sell out streak going.
