The ask 5-0 is essentially propaganda at this point.

It's always been a little off putting that the guy who is in charge of media relations for the police is such good friends with the actual media.

I think he's pretty fair with how he handles the media to be honest. Several times he's called out the pathetic excuse we have for a newspaper called the Des Moines Register for publishing some hit piece on the DMPD without actually fact checking their claims with anyone so he can be critical at times too. He really got fired up about some OpEd that they allowed to be published that was lacking in facts but published in a manner that the editorial board should have fact checked it with the DMPD before publishing as it was so it did not mislead people that what the author was claiming was factual.

He's in a tough spot, you want them to be transparent and have good public and media relations and part of that is doing a show like he does on the radio. Part of the problem too is that in order to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations he can probably only reveal so much too because he's said it before, the police only get 1 shot at getting a case right because 1 mess up by them and someone can get off the hook for a crime they committed. He's even mentioned before that there have been instances where the media was incorrectly reporting something on a story and he's brought reporters into his office to view some stuff off the record that he can't share publicly yet as a way to essentially throw them a bone and get them to stop falsely reporting on something until all the facts are made public. Sometimes it is to the benefit of law enforcement and the public to not put everything on the table right away until they have a suspect in custody or case built where revealing certain information too soon could be a disadvantage to bringing someone to justice.

Trying to keep this out of the cave with this comment but I feel it is relevant and I think our police sometimes get a bad reputation because of the way the media portrays them so it works both ways too with the media relations. Yes they are human too and will make a mistake from time to time and should be held accountable when they do but 99% of the time I am confident in the job they do and also trying to keep public relations good too. 5-0 mentioned something recently how every homicide case in DM this year they have arrested a suspect for and most have been in a very timely manner too so the detective work they have been doing has been good has not led to any cold cases so far as they have been able to collect good information to be confident they have the right person when they make an arrest.

I've always found the 5-0 thing weird. But I've learned that all complaints about KXNO usually come down to one common denominator, and that's not having **** to talk about for alot of the year. Most complaints can usually are the result of them having 4 hours to fill and nothing to talk about.

Playing devil's advocate here, but what if KXNO gave a weekly spot to a police reform activist? I'd imagine the "stick to sports" folks would be out in full force then.

I think Parizek does a nice job of coming off approachable and he's likable enough. But I know there was one time I was listening where he went on a diatribe about how much crime is stopped by pretextual traffic stops, which are an enormous issue in the policing world. I also heard KXNO run an ad put out by the police union encouraging people to comply when police are questioning them, regardless of their justification, which is also to many a hot-button debate in the police reform world. Without taking a side, I think you can at least agree it touches on controversial topics that have absolutely zero to do with sports.

So without Caving this thing, I guess I can see why people don't understand giving something like this a platform on a sports station while also not providing any opposing viewpoints. It just seems very out of place to me.

Maybe, just maybe, the DMPD gets a bad rap because of their run of misconduct and lack of transparency addressing these issues. From falsifying reports, to planting evidence, to tackling civilians, to detaining reporters.

It's ok to criticize our public servants, they are not infallible.

Thank you for bringing some good information to the discussion. Please use more periods.

Apparently this is a dumb thing to say.... for whatever reason......
I dumbed it too, I think it’s completely fair to dumb it, and I did it for several reasons.

I think it’s fair to criticize something even if you don’t consume it. Because otherwise you could never criticize any content (because you can’t criticize it if you don’t listen to it, and you can’t criticize it if you do because you should just stop listening).

I don’t listen to Travis because I don’t want to support him. That doesn’t mean I can’t criticize him for being an immature man-child or potentially engaging in sexual harassment.

I also don’t think criticizing him for being an immature man-child and potentially engaging in sexual harassment makes someone a “Karen”

I do think that people that approve of sexual harassment are likely to use the “Karen” put down however.

We recently got back from a trip and Ohio not only has info for victims of sex trafficking in their rest area stalls, but they have stickers you can take with a phone number to call if you can’t currently access a phone but might be able to later. An alarming number of the stickers had already been taken on our stops there.
