I think it's actually a psychological thing. The color pink has a calming effect to mess with player energy, or at least that was the rationale.
Even if it doesn't, you get in the players' heads as they try to fight it and lose focus on the game.
I think Fry said at once that the pink locker room served two purposes -- the one you mentioned, and that getting into the heads of opposing coaches so they would waste time worrying about how to counter act it, such as spending time covering up the walls.

Matt and his players make a point to touch the "Honor before victory" plaque before they take the field. Iowa paints the visitor's locker room pink.

I miss CyTwins posts. He is a Cyclone legend. No one could **** off the hok fans better than him and he seemed to have an inside to hok info that really ******* them off. I think that maybe he's in a protective custody program as some crazy hok fans have threatened his life.
