Watching the replay of the game. After our 3 and out on the first drive of the game, the line of scrimmage was the 24.5 yard line. Perkins was set up at the 10 yard line. Snap was perfect. Perkins caught it at the 11. He took 3 steps forward and kicked it at the 15 yard line. VanNess met our blocker at the 17, pushed him back to the 16 and blocked the kick rather easily with his left arm extended.

Iowa faced a 4th down on their 2nd drive at their own 34 yard line. Taylor was set up at the 19 and caught the snap at the 19. He took 2 steps forward and kicked it at the 22. ISU got no pressure at all on the punt.

Seems pretty simple. Perkins needs to catch the ball 15 yards from the LOS instead of 13.5 yards. He also needs to take 2 steps instead of 3 steps. Feel free to offer me an assistant coaching position.

That third step makes all the difference in the world. It seemed like he had the ball forever every time he punted because of that third step. Another yard and a half back would help us a ton as well.

I had flashbacks to the 1972 Alabama-Auburn Game. Listened to the game on the radio with my Alabama fan mom and my Auburn fan sister and brother.

Alabama was 10-0, ranked #2 and ran the ball up and down the field on Auburn that day. They were ahead 16-3 in the 4th quarter. Auburn could barely move the ball. Alabama lined up to punt. Punt blocked and returned for a TD. The next time Alabama had the ball, Punt, It was blocked and returned for a TD. Auburn pulled off the miracle win 17-16. The game is simply called "Punt, 'Bama, Punt" in the state of Alabama. For years, you would see the bumper stickers. If you go to Auburn today and go to the J&M Bookstore, they have it playing in the background. At least they did when I made my one and only trip to Auburn in 1994 (vs. Kentucky).

So, take solace ISU fans, the Cyclones did something that the great 1972 SEC Champion Alabama team could not do. Survive a two blocked punt game againt their in-state rival.

Let's Go State!

Were there two blocked punts? The first one was a shank off our own guys helmet.

Thought one Iowa player got both or something.

Either way ISU's blocking on it looked bad. The unit as a whole needs to clean it up.

Seems that the blockers were too close to the punter. Either the punter needs to step back or the blockers need to step forward. The defenders moved the blockers, but they didn't blow past them. So I don't know that the blockers will be much better, at least consistently.

I'd think it'd be easier to change the formation than the punter's routine in a short turnaround. Work on getting it out quicker, but in the meantime give him some more room.

How many times has a team won getting two punts blocked? Can’t be many.
I read some stat once that if a team blocks a punt their odds or win percentage is 90 percent. So, I guess Iowa's win percentage yesterday was 180 percent. :jimlad: That's some impossible odds that ISU beat yesterday.

This game tape will provide some great information to the Iowa State Special Teams consultant,
I do have to think that the Iowa Special teams coach (Levar Woods?) is a detail man and a solid recruiter.

I've always taught our punters to take two steps. The first step right before or as you are catching the ball.
