I agree with that, however, I also wonder how many one score games we're in compared to most teams?

We seem to be in a ton of them, and I think that goes to CMC's coaching style. When we get up a little, we get SUPER conservative and try to just hold on it seems. That's no way to win games IMO. Our defense seems to do a great job of keeping opponents scoring pretty low, so the game will always be close unless our offense happens to play really well and can score quite a few points. But that's hard to do when you try to take the air out of the ball when you get up a little.

Every game that goes by it's crazy how eerily similar CMC is to KF at Iowa... and that's not necessarily a good thing. Sometimes I wonder which one of those two is more conservative actually. It's easy to just say KF is.... but CMC is very close.

I can't think of many blown leads recently. Are there games you are thinking of? In the last 2.5 seasons, the only one that comes to mind is WVU last year. Then Louisiana there was a 4 point lead at halftime.
In all the other losses, ISU has been playing from behind and made the score closer at the end:
Baylor this year
Iowa, Baylor, TTU, OU, and Clemson in '21
OSU and OU in '20

Personally, I think conservative play calling to start and lack of adjustments until halftime has been much more of an issue than playing conservative with a lead.

As time goes on it’s going to get harder for him to get hired at Notre Dame or Ohio State if he has stats like that.

Nah, it would take a big regression to do that. I think the rising sentiment nationally is that "he's hit the ceiling of what can be done at Iowa State". Right or wrong, I've heard that more and more over the past couple months as jobs get talked about.

If ISU had equal or better talent then the record in one score games is probably better so I understand this completely.

CMC is great for a program like ISU. I think at an Ohio State, ND, Michigan, etc they might be disappointed with what they get.

I feel it might be like a Greg McDermott going to ISU type scenario.

Campbell has found a way to stay close in games, but not win a high percentage. Let's just go back to the good old days when ISU was down 30 to rank teams in the first half. The reality is that ISU has been punching above their weight for most of the Campbell era. Last year was the only time that I thought that ISU lost games that they just didn't show up for.

Iowa State fans with some perspective would just appreciate the fact he has gotten to the point where we have that many close games. Most losses fall into the close category. We rarely get blown out under Campbell.

i have attended many blowouts in Jack Trice throughout my life... fine with where we are. figured if we lost it would be to suffering from self-inflicted wounds and getting outworked as we are a young team. hopefully we continue to improve throughout the season and can sweep the state of Kansas in football.

By my count Campbell is 13-21 in 1 score games against FBS opponents in his ISU tenure. If you throw out the 1-3 his first year while building the program then it’s 12-18. Not terrible but could be better. Though we managed to finally get over the hump against Iowa this year I’m concerned that we’re finding ways to lose most of the close games, particularly since the start of last season. There are no bad teams in the Big 12 this year and everyone has a competent QB. We need to start winning some of these close games because every game left on our schedule could be a 1 score game. There are no gimmes like Rutgers, Northwestern or Nebraska to pad the record.
Bet it really gnawed at you that you had to wait four weeks to post that.

One thing with some of those losses is that we were down and continued to fight to get it back within 1 score. Many we had an outside chance to pull something off, but the odds definitely weren’t high. So it’s not like they were blown games. We pretty much always win the games where we outplay the other team (other than Iowa). Also, almost every loss is within a score the last 5 years.

Right. Just appreciate that we don’t get blown out anymore! It’s so neat!

The college football equivalent of a participation trophy.

Campbell is a great coach. Coaches are always learning. The only things you can complain about Campbell have been 1-6 in Big 12 openers, Special teams early in the season, and the record in close games.

But when you were starting with a team that was terrible in all phases all year long, it might take a while.

It seems like winning those close games with more consistency is often the last big step a program has to take.

This statistic does not take into account being an overwhelming underdog and coming close.
